does anyone know of a program where i could draw a detailed plan of something I’m going to be working on, labeling label each part on the drawing myself, but the program would automaticaly create a separate parts list from the drawing for me?
I imagin some of the big cad programs would do this, but I’m looking for something on the lower end of the spectrum.
thanks,

There is a way to do this in vectroworks or Turbocad pro, but neither are cheap, both require learning curve, and the separation is not automatic. You would have to do separate parts and merge them, as far as I know.
What is it you are trying to draw? there are proprietaary programs for certain kinds of rthings like cabinets or houses, but then these get very expensive.

I've been working on a bath remodel at my own house, and I have found the biggest challange is having all the parts I need to do the plumbing. Even after carefully making a list, and buying a bunch of extra stuf, I still find myself returning to Lowes constantly to get something I didn't realize I was going to need.
That's when I got the idea for a program that if you scetched somthing out, labeled the parts on the drawing, then got a little shopping list at the bottom of the picture.
I do general home repairs and improvements for a living, so it seems like a simple program to do this would come in handy for lots of other projects.
I have visio on my computer, but haven't used it much, so don't know if it would do that. I mostly use microsoft paint, a very basic drawing program, fine for making a quick sketch of something, but won't make the parts list.
I was thinking in terms of CAD accuracy, but for what you describe a rough schematic with ref to a database or such would do the job, I guess. That's not my area of expertise.
