I’m finishing up the punch list on a home that has a trap door in the office floor that leads to a storm room. I was asked to hinge this door as well as install flush finger rings the hinges are to be concealed. This door is made up of 3/4 subfloor and 3/4 hardwood flooring. I am lost as to what type of hinges to use or how to do it. I have looked at various chest hinges at he local big box store they only open from 65 to 90 degrees. I’m thinking about the thickness of the door wouldn’t it have to raise up first then swing open. thank you for any tips, ideals. thank you again terry

grumpy,
Do a search for SOSS hinges. I used them on the hidden door in my house and they work great! Not cheap mind you (I think I paid $50. for a pair?) but awesome pieces of mechanics.

Yeah, SOSS. They come in a bunch of sizes, from jewelry box size to large door size. You'll still need substantial stops all around, of course, to withstand the weight of walking on the door.
happy?
Or you could put finger pulls on each side of the trap door and do away with the hinges...just set the door aside when accessing the crawl space.

i once used some MG midget trunk hinges... they bolt flat to a surface (underside) even some auto door hinges might work... just a thought
