Anyone out there with experience or advice on using acid staining technique for new slab house? Considering staining the entire downstair portion of new house except the bedrooms. Any drawbacks? health hazard? Am I crazy???

Not at all. Since concrete can be cold are you using RIH?
Both are quite popular here. Acid stain is used in residential as well as commercial applications. I've used it. There's a little side-bar article in the latest issue of FHBs Houses issue from an architect in Tx who DIY in his own house. One of the gurus lives and works here.
Here's what I did lately. Take it for what it's worth. I opted not to use it on the house I recently started....because it does not penetrate that far and wears off in high traffic areas unless you're religious about keeping a sacrifice coating on top.
I used colored concrete. A 2lb mix to keep the cost reasonable. To get color variation I had the concrete guy burn it with a power trowel. Scored it..32" squares on the diagonal.. 1/4" blade as shallow as the saw guy could set it. Not planning on grouting the score lines....it's not tile after all. Watched the pressure gauge on my RIH like a hawk....even tho the concrete guy had been very careful during the pour.
Looks cool, just like I wanted.
