Armed with all your advice, the concrete work to expand this shed into a shop is mostly done. Turned out pretty well, although I did end up short–a little over 1/8 yard. Didn’t really enjoy mixing up the rest by hand. <G>
I built a 3+ car garage years ago, so am somewhat familiar with framing, but that was architect designed and this is certainly not, so:
Building will be 12 x 24′. 2×4 walls and 2×10 rafters. Shed (shed and hip?) roof.
1. The present roof is held up on the high side by a 2×4 ledger nailed to the barn wall. Can I do something similar (how big, lag screws, bolts?) or should I really build another wall here?
2. Seems like I read (though I can’t find it now) that if I put the rafters directly over the wall studs, I won’t need double top plates?
3. Archives seem to indicate 2×4 studs are OK 24″ o.c. as long as wall is less than 10′ tall?
That should get me started–once it melts enough to get the straw off the new concrete!
Thanks.

Tab....it looks like a fun project.
The ledger idea should be fine. A 12 span on the raftes won't exert an inordinate amount of push against the existing wall. The plywood sheathing of the shed roof will help spread the thrust against the entire structure and since you will have a hip, the ledger will be quite small. I wouldn't build a wall underneath the high end.
A single plate will certainly suffice if you stack the rafters precisely.
2x4 studs should work fine.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
Warning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, all of it is considered bottom of the barrel by Gabe. According to him I am not to be counted amongst the worst of the worst. If you want real framing information...don't listen to me..just ask Gabe!
How best to attach the ledger to the barn wall? And once it's there, would it be preferable to rest the rafters on top of the ledger or butt them up to it? Hangers a good idea, with either option?
Thanks for the help.

Lag bolts - I would use a 2x6 ledger or 2x8 instead of the 2x4 because there is more meat, less likely to spit out and cup or twist and to have strength in spite of knots.the size would also provide landing for the hardware that i would use too. Set teh ledger and hang to it with the rafter cut to pitch and set in hanger.
