That story does not exist. It never happened. Disregard any and all references to that story because it is impossible and does not exist.

Neat!  With all the CO2 we're pumping out it should work even better in the future.

      that is really really cool.

There are some crystaline additives that will do the same thing- they're normally used for waterproofing, and are dumped into the truck at the plant at a cost of around $40-50/yard.   They can eliminate the need for spray-on or sheet membrane waterproofing, as the crystals "grow" to fill in the cracks that naturally form in concrete.   The one we've used on projects in the past is at the link below.

thanks for the link. Wonder why it isn't speced more, especially for DOT work and the like.Seems like the additional cost would pay for itself? What kind of jobs did you use it on?

We used it on a below-grade parking garage.  By adding it to the concrete for the walls, we eliminated the need for waterproofing on the outside of the garage.  When you're 40' below downtown Atlanta's streets, you want to avoid leaks- it's tough to get back down there and fix them later...."Brilliance!! Bob, do you think Kryton's "special chemicals in crystaline form" is really just powdered Bentonite clay?

      1. BobKovacs | Apr 24, 2009 09:02pm | #11

No, it's something different.  I've seen videos of the chemical reaction that "grows" the crystals that fill the voids, and I've also seen the crystals themselves up close- I'm no chemist, but it's definitely not Bentonite."Brilliance!! It sure can slows the set time contrary to what they tell you.  I used Xpex (mixed into concrete) in a suspended garage slab and the finisher waited from 8am until 3am the next day to start the power trowel.

Yeah, I remember that being an issue- you've got to add some accelerators and mess with the w/c ratio unless you want to deal with a really slow set."Brilliance!! That's all I can say- Sheer, unadulterated brilliance!!" Wile E. Coyote- Super Genius

Back in the early 90's during Socal's previous building boom, there was a lot of #### stucco work being done and leaks were prevelant specially in the housing track we lived in.  The builder tried using a product like this on the exterior stucco and promised that this stuff would sealed every crack.  Problem wasn't the cracks, it was the bad tile roof job, bad papering on the roof and walls and bad flashing, wrong windows for stucco. that were the problem.

Once this stuff was applied the leaks seemed to be worse.  Water behind the stucco couldn't get out.

Class action attorneys were running rampant throught out the area.   I stayed as far away from them as possible.

It does sound like an interesting product for concrete.  Learning something new here, again.

Thats the typical dilemma one faces with new products. Is it an improvement over standard practice or will it create new, possibly  unforeseen problems in the future. This forum is a great help in figuring that out.

Not nearly as sensational, but our city has been replacing cracked sections of sidewalks around tree roots with recycled rubber so it won't crack as the roots grow.
