My father had concrete roof shingles installed about 10 years or more ago. He said they had a 50 year guarantee and that should last him a lifetime. (He is 91.) Now they are brittle and the guy installing new windows says he is afraid walking on them will break them. He also says there is some kind of class-action lawsuit about these shingles. Does anyone know anything about this? And how would I know the manufacturer? His papers are in a mess, so digging through years of stuff to find out who installed them will be difficult. Any advise?

try googling "class action lawsuit roof shingles" and variations thereof.
One of our resident roofers may have more info.

We installed a synthetic concrete slate called firefree 2 eight years ago. We were concerned about the product and did our best to persuade the client to try something else. But she insisted on using it.
They claimed to install just like wood shakes and came with a fifty year warranty. We made sure to install them to manufactures spec's and used 50 year kynar flashings.
Four years after installation she had us come back and tear them off and replace them with the real thing.
She is in a class action suit and waiting her turn. She will probably get pennies on the dollar since the manufacturer has gone bankrupt (only to open shop with a similar product under a different name).
Good Luck,
