I have a problem with one window in our new house (2mo old). The window is 6 ft x 6ft, fixed, double pane, low E, Argon. On cold mornings it has a circle of condensation on it. The circle is about 2 ft dia in the middle of the pane. The rest of the glass is clear as are all the other windows in the house. I think it has lost its Argon, but why the circle and why only in the middle?

To prevent moisture buildup and improve performance, install a continuous air barrier—such as drywall or specialized membranes—under tongue-and-groove boards or other interior wall paneling.

Hi Bill,
Good hunk of glass. Don't know the severity of the cold in your area. It's not that unusual for condensation to form on one or more locations on a window in winter if air is restricted by curtains or other obstructions.
Gabe
*The center of the glass is the coldest part of the glass. ANY window can havve condenstation. When warm moist air meets a cold hard surface, condensation happens. This is no fault of the window, window manufacturer or builder. With your house being only 2 months old it has a ways to go before it dries out. Try using rain-x on the inside of the glass.
*It may have lost its argon, but that is a very short time and most double-pane windows are sealed better now than in the 70's. (Unless it was damaged during installation). Are other, similar windows behaving the same? The possible loss of argon doesn't explain the the pattern of condensation though. I'd think of convection and radiation for that. Are warm objects like curtains near the edges and radiating heat to the edges? Is the air flow inside the house less or is the air flow outside the house more in the center of the window? Something to ponder on a cold winter night.
*Bill, is the cond. between the panes or on the inside surface of the glass?
