Conduit necessary in an island?
Does anyone know the code surrounding running wiring within an island? Is the cable required to be fully within conduit or am I ok just running conduit within the cabinet where damage to the cable could occur, ie conduit from the base of the cab up to just underneath the countertop and romex to the receptacle?

Romex is not suppose to be exposed. The interior of a cabinet is an exposed area, so therefore you use conduit. Think of it, if nothing else as peace of mind for future generations.
Running conduit will also allow you to have the option to pull more wires and increase capacity in the future—an added bonus.
