Recommend a lawyer. Anything and everything in NYC is tricky.
Post this to TGNY. He lives in NYC, and might know.

NY law on construction liens is found in the NYS Lien Law. It's not particularly complicated, but it can be a little detailed. There are short time limits and they are easy to blow. You must serve the proper people in the proper way - usually certified mail. There are forms for filing a lien, IIRC, Blumberg has them and can be found at any good legal stationary store. There used to be a good one across from Supreme Court in Brooklyn, but it's been a while since I was there.
All that being said, either hire a lawyer with construction background or use one of the companies that specializes in filing liens. Save you some time. (I did construction law for about 15 years, but haven't done anything in the last couple or three.)

Glad somebody found one of the companies for you.
One or two things you might want to be careful with - the amount of the lien. IIRC, there is provision that if you willfully exaggerate the lien, it can be stricken and you can be penalized. So this is not the area to go crazy to get their attention. Also, be careful on the owners and who you are working for. Example, if there's a partnership, name the partnership and the individual partners that you dealt with.
Good luck.
