I’ve been asked by our local builders assoc. for some topics for one & two day training seminars that builders/ contractors could send upcoming & present foremen & supts. to. One of the ideas I’ve had would be a two day program teaching efficient building/foundation layout. The first day would be primarily classroom oriented going over the fundamentals & reviewing plans, etc. The second day would be spent in the field with groups of guys staking out several differerent buildings & making layout sticks showing footing depths, anchor bolt placement.Excavation for sloping lots, wall layout for underslab plumbing etc. are relevent topics for study. At any rate that’s just one idea-I’d greatly value the ideas of you professionals.

A topic not generally covered but I believe is important, is how to errect and safely use various forms of scaffolding and staging.
You could discuss when and how it is appropiate to use different types of scaffolding devices and even have some "hands-on" instruction involving any or all of the following:
pipe scaffolding; ladder jacks; pump jacks; wood (stick built) scaffolding; hydraulic manlifts; roof jacks; the proper use of safety harnesses
You could also go into detail as to how to set up a job site that is to be temporarily "fenced off from the public and/ or instruct how to build temporary public walkways with protective roof shields and barricades when having to conduct work overhead in a populated downtown city street area.
