I was wondering if there is a simple/safe way to use the auto-on feature of the Fein and run a wire up to the business end with a button to turn it on and off (it could just unplug from the auto-control outlet for use with a tool).

That's a heck of an idea. Something as simple as a 120volt led or bulb mounted to a nicely designed switch would probably do it.
Maybe even better would be to get one of the remote controls designed for dust collectors. They run about $50-60 - check PennState's web site.
Also, some folks have had good luck using the remote controls designed for xmas lights for smaller dust collector units, check one of the Ace or Aco's maybe see what the specs are.

"Maybe even better would be to get one of the remote controls designed for dust collectors." (Julian Tracy)Ah, you just gave me another idea. My wife has a remote control outlet for the Christmas Tree lights I could plug in the outlet of the Fein with a night light. (now, where's that remote?)
Ah, the convenience! The remote worked great! A "night light" won't trigger the Fein auto-on feature however - I used a socket with a 60 wt light bulb. The remote control outlet was about 10$ from Wal Mart - it plugs in the Fein special outlet. The light bulb plugs in the remote outlet. The remote is a key-chain size. This will be great for several situations; such as when we locate the vacuum outside the room when sanding.
ua got me there ... the hose IS longer!
I was wondering if/what ya rigged up.
was the remote a first run winner?
I was thinking ... the idea of a wire and switch "should" be made to work ...
I still just walk back though!

Hey Jeff,I know I'm going to catch it for this - haven't had time to make this look pretty yet. Notice the nice little keychain remote! I'm telling you there are situations where you won't mind the convenience of this. You don't have to be looking at the vac for this little 10$ remote outlet to work.
Holy Cluster-F#$% Batman!
That pic is fantastic ...

Ah, the spark of invention lights the fires of convenience!
just for general cleaning?

"is it really that hard to walk 10 ft back to the vac?" (JeffBuck)Yes, you got me on that one (but I think the Fein hose is longer). I think the source of this is my basic dislike for cleaning. (subconscious maybe getting up). Thanks for the whine alert.
