Added onto / renovated this house a few years ago; this MB originally had a window here looking out to the back yard. Addition is now beyond it.
Instead, recessed a niche (and closet to left abit deeper) into addition. Gave more floor space for the giant Eastlake bed in this tiny BR in Sears-type bungalow in Arlington, VA. Also, the little phone / alarm clock niche.
The cool thing? That niche has no ceiling; a shaft goes up through the attic to a 16×46 Velux fixed skylight. Cool light in the day; stars sometime (it’s DC, after all!)

Very nice. Were you living in DC at the time?
Was there any way of "curtaining" the skylight in case the homeowner wanted to sleep past sunrise?
The room with the bookcase (visible at right) was part of the addition? Was the addition also part of your project?
Allen
No way planned to curtain the skylight - she said she wouldn't need it. Bookcase is in the addition - got some pix to post on the other computer. Ships ladder built into the bookcases gives access to a partially open loft.

Here's the layout - addition in red - original house was tiny; it got reconfigured to match the blue part. Master bath / coats was the 2nd bedroom; little shed where the Utility is for kitchen and bath.

How did I know this was going to be your thread from the title?
That's a very cool interpretation of a window.
Was this the house that had you running to the 'Sniper Home Depot'? Just there the other day thinking of that story. Scary times those were here.

LOL!
Yeah, that's the one. I'll be up there working my but (sic) off, this Sunday - Wednesday, and then Friday-Saturday after Turkey day. Family and SIL will be down in southern MD (Solomon's) - too crowded for a week for me!
Let's get together this coming week- I have no plans other than to work and sleep. House is on Garfield, a tiny street which Ts into the highway that Depot is on.
Forrest - hoping to finally find out if BTers have an actual, tangible existence on this temporal plane
Absolutely!I'll be around through Wed afternoon. Just sent you my info.Best,
Steve
Interesting idea, doing the skylight that way.
That bed sure looks cool - It sort of matches a dresser that used to belong to my Grandmother. I don't know what style that is, but I sure like it.
Love it!
