When deck posts exceed what the prescriptive code tables allow, it's time to consult a structural engineer for post sizing and possible bracing.

I stripped an antique brass bed that had at least 15 coats of paint on it. Head board and footboard. Took 2 hours....A good set of gloves, lots of rags, a hose hooked up to spigot, and Easy Off oven cleaner. Spray it on. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Wipe it off. Comes off and sparkles like they were brand new. Once you wipe it off, wash it down to neutralize the cleaner. This worked on brass. I can't say I've tried copper, but boy was I impressed. Test it on a spot first if you don't believe me.
You could also use a heat gun. Be very careful if you are working near wood. Keep a fire extinguisher or a charged hose handy. Strippers work well and are messy.
