That's a beautiful home. You all have done an excellent job on that roof. It's too bad we can't see the inside of that home. I bet it's just as classy as the outside.
On a side note. Will that copper roof eventually turn green like the the original did?
Will that copper roof eventually turn green like the the original did?
It will turn green, but the original was painted steel. This house is less than 10 years old.Birth, school, work, death.....................
When you finish up, do you clean the copper (fingerprints etc) with anything ?Say CU, how did you change text color in your Reply ?

No - a couple of rains will do that free of charge. It starts turning with the first dew, so cleaning it would be wasting time and effort.
Say CU, how did you change text color in your Reply ?
Look at the menu box at the top the box where you're typing. There's a drop down arrow for "paragraph", "font", "size", and "color". Highlight what you want to change and go to the drop down and click your preference.Birth, school, work, death.....................

Just highlight the text you want to change the color of and pull down the "Color" box

OK, the problem is those options don't show up when I use the Opera browser,
I'm using IE to post this.
I have the same problem with opera when trying to post on this website.Taunton's not writing the website correctly. Should be browser independent.Seeyou-
The copper roof looks fantastic!!
you know, I've been posting here for at least 3-4 years, and I never noticed that bar.
That's a purdy roof.
Like copper, I'm turning green...but from envy.

Kind of.Birth, school, work, death.....................
I tried cropping the 'after' pic to match the before, but it looks a bit dark and grainy.
A pic taken when the sun is shinning on the roof (and at higher resolution) might show up better and not animate quite so grainy. Get a better pic and I'll redo the after segment.

Dang it, Butch, you just need to download that Flash plugin. You're missing out on garbage ads on just about every website (many of them are animated with Flash).
For instance, if you go to
http://www.yahoo.com
Just above "In the News" is an animated ad. What do you see? Just a fixed pic? Try right-clicking on it (clicking with the right mouse button) and see if one of the pop-up options is "about Macromedia Flash player 7". Click on that and see if it doesn't take you to a place where you can get the flash plugin.

John that was a great response, thankyou
You described it in a way that even this simpelton can understand
I'm at work now but when I get home I'm going to give it a try.
< is an animated ad. What do you see? Just a fixed pic? >The ad was moving.....but I right clicked and when I wentto the site it said ........"You have version 7,0,19,0 installed"so is that the most current or is there more?
You should be good to go. Click on the SWF file I posted. If you're on dial-up, it might take it a minute to load.
The one in Mike's thread were a bit clearer.
jt8
"Real difficulties can be overcome; it is only the imaginary ones that are unconquerable. " --Theodore N. Vail
After I downloaded the attach. it asked me what program I wanted to use to open it with and micromediia wasn't one of the selections. Now what???
When you went to Yahoo, the advertisement was animated? If so, you've got the Flash plug-in installed.
At that point you 'should' be able to just left click on the SWF file and it will open within the text window (text is replaced with the animation). Once again, if you're on dial-up that might take a minute. After you're done watching the animation (or viewing a pic) you can hit 'back' to return to the text.
If you have right-click'ed on the SWF and chosen to download it, then you can simply go back and open it with Internet Explorer.
ha ha, after all this work, that flash isn't going to have been worth all the trouble. Grainy animation. But if nothing else, at least you know you're good to go on other Flash animations. Or you can go back and look at Mike's SWF's. They were a bit clearer.

What is the cost of a roof like that compare to
steel?
slate?
cedar?
I am just curious as my home will be needing a new roof in a few year. My wife and I will probably use cedar shakes but this may be an interesting option. I am sure it is steep but have no idea how it compares to the other highend options
What is the cost of a roof like that compare to
steel? Hidden fastener kynar is slightly less, but that's what we were replacing because of finish failure. Actually, it may have been a polyester finish.
slate? Copper is less.
cedar? Copper is about the same for 5x the life.
These comparisons are for my area, assuming all other variables are equal (proper decking in place, etc.). Birth, school, work, death.....................
Do you have any anecdotal evidence about the durability of the copper sheet vs. cedar shake? My house sits below a few trees. I am curious to know if one is more suseptible to puncture than the other.
Thanks
Jason

I know you get jobs the full range from mundane to fancy. For the next interesting one you and/or Sphere should plan for more elaborate pics.
Photo-document portions of it... like the dormers. Set the angle of the shot in the before pics and then repeat it for the durings and after. Good clear pics of each stage. Whether used in a Flash animation or just putting the pics in sequence on a webpage... either way, that is the kind of thing that really grabs folks.
When I see the before pic of that turret in CA and then the after... WOW! And IMO, the 'wow' factor goes up when you have the same angle (so there's no question that its the same turret/dormer/whatever).
You could have had a whole page devoted to that house you're working on now. Before front, after front. Before back, after back. Detail dormer : before, during, during, after. Etc. It's another 'wow' project. But we don't have clean before pics.
You might think your work is just 'run of the mill', but like Stan's stairs, they really make folks situp and take notice. And IMO both you and Stan need to showcase your work more.jt8

I've got a whole series of before pics. They were taken in the winter when trees were bare. I can't get some of the same pics now because of foilage. I've documented this one better than any other before. Hopefully, we'll do better next time.
Often, we forget to photograph because we're focused on the job at hand. I've got two other crews working besides Dale & Duane. I often have to fabricate 'til 10 pm or so, to have a package ready to deliver to them at 8 AM and then have to rush back to the shop to get a package ready for the big crew by noon. By that time, I've run out of copper and don't have a delivery scheduled 'til the next day, so I have to run pick up a pallet and get it unloaded. I get Josh a package together for the next day and sit down to do some paper work. Then I think, "I wish I'd got some pics today."
D & D get focused on getting a certain task done, knowing it's going to rain tomorrow, so they can't leave any loose ends hanging. When they're getting tools up on the scaffold, they might forget the camera. They're not gonna make a special trip back down for it. They finish a section and I send the big crew out to move scaffold to the next section. Wish we'd gotten some pics today.Birth, school, work, death.....................

Thank you. Yes we did button up the site. I share the camera with the DW so I don't get too many shots, and at like 400 bucks, I am lucky she lets me have it for a day!
Kind of a deep sigh getting this one done, feels right.
We are shed of the scaffold on the east plane, working on the south, need that corner tower there, otherwise iffin the boys want the east pole and NE tower of scaff, it is all free up.
Don't be bending too much more, I think we are covered till west face and then some...need hip cap and drip, ..thats all..oh, and rivets. ( and a new partner, if Dale keeps loading my pocket stash with rivet shanks, I will toss him off the roof..this is war..LOL) He is gonna get a geocel makeover iin that new tool bag..with some chicken an ribs on the side..(G) Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

They're made on an apron brake manually, so I guess that's a hand brake. That's a term I've heard used interchangeably with "tongs". I couldn't do a very good hem on them with a portable brake if that's what you're referring to.
Here's a pic of my brake.

Very nice roof. I am considering using copper for a small angled shed/hip roof over my famer's porch. The only problem I see is that I have to climb out on that roof every so often for routine maintenance like romoving wooden storm windows, or unclogging gutters. Other than the risk of falling (it is a shallow pitch), do you think I risk hurting or marring the roof itself?

Because it's an extremely smooth surface, you'd want to be sure it's clean before you walk on it. Tiny particles, like the size of sand, can roll under your feet like ball bearings. Any moisture would act as a lubricant. You also have to take some care not to step on the standing seams.
Other than those precautions, it should hold up better to being walked on than brittle materials like tile or slate.

Roof looks fantastic!
Have a question about green patina.
I noticed a building in Hoboken NJ that was finished this spring and the copper siding and flashing on it has a nice green patina. Another building on the same block that was built 3 years ago also has copper siding - but it is still dull brown color.
Why is that? Is it because the quality of copper is different? Can you use some kind of acid to make that green patina?

You can buy copper sheet that's pre-patina'd. You can also treat it after installation or my favorite: leave it alone and let it turn naturally. Birth, school, work, death.....................
