cordless compact/subcompact drills / drivers?
OK – I’m guessing this is a FAQ but based on no search function, let’s do it again… What is the best lithium compact drill, impact driver or combo kit. Just to be clear I’m talking about something like this. Or, if someone can just point me to a thread where it has already been discussed in lenght that would be cool too…

I've got the 10.8 Bosch
I've got the 10.8 Bosch driver and impactor. I got them cheap when they relabeled the tools from 10.8v to 12v. I haven't used the Milwaukees or the Makitas so I can't say how they stack up to one another, but I know that I like the Bosch's a lot. I would not hesitate to buy them again.
Is the Bosch driver variable speed?

I've got several of the makita 10.8 compacts. I am very happy with them so far. The only question I have is durability and that will be revealed in the fullness of time. There are two ranges of variable speed and a adjustable clutch for the drivers which are rated at 200 inch/lbs of torque vs 100 for the Bosch IIRC. I haven't tried them side by side with the boschs yet so ...? The impacts work well except like all the impacts I have used after a while the noise gets irritating.
OOPS! I posted the same comment twice. Now I have replaced that iteration with this confession (I hope).
Same here. They are not the same as big guns, but handy for those jobs where you need to keep a drill in pouch or pocket. I just used the driver with a drywall bit for tacking up ceiling sheets to be screwed off later with a real corded gun and it was a lot nicer working overhead holding up the sheet with one hand without having to have a heavy driver in the other.
Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch and Hitachi make them. Lowes stocks the Hitachi and the Bosch lines. home Depot stocks the Makita and the Milwaukee lines. , if you want to hold them before you buy.
They seem to be about the same spec wise. The Hitachi has a different style battery that looks like a regular larger tool battery only shrunken. They have a bigger base and can stand upright. the others have a round battery that fits in the handle.
Most of the drill/drivers are available with either a real chuck or a 1/4 hex quick release chuck. Most of the impact driver have about 800 lbs of torque.
I believe that only Bosch and Milwaukee have an adjustable angle head driver tool available if that is important to you.
I think that the drill/drivers are usually two speed and the impact drivers are variable speed.

Really, in the larger size panasonics of which I'm a user, the impact is two speed, the drill motors are variable. Maybe a thought flip there?
Naw, I just didn't say it
Naw, I just didn't say it right. They are all variable speed triggers but a couple of the drill/drivers have a two position range switch like 0-350 rpm and 0-1200 rpm.
I had the Bosch 10.8 for over a year, then they got ripped off. I just replaced them with the white Makita 10.8v. Right now I think I like the Makitas better EXCEPT the battery is a bear to get out for me - lots of fingertip strength needed. I like the metal box they came in too.
forget which, but one of the last two Popular Mechaniccs Magazines had a test comparison on these mini's
