it was cheaper to replace than just buy batteries

Drill a hole in the back and insert a crank.

I used to save them for a while, figuring I might need them for something. Of course, I never used them again and just threw them out after they collected a sufficient layer of dust.
The last one that died, an old Bosch 12V, I saved the chuck since it was so nice, and then I took it apart just to see how well things were made "back then". It had all metal gears and ball bearings and needle bearings - not an oilite bushing in the whole thing. It also had an electronic torque control that shut down the drill when the torque level was reached - no chattering like the new stuff. Friggin' german craftsmanship - amazing.
Been using DeWalt, but have the 400lb torque Sears drill as a backup or to leave at the other end of my latest project... About the time the 19.5v Craftsman drill/driver had it's batteries start failing, I found a newer one at a garage sale with a good battery and charger for $15... Saved the old one for stirring paint and messy things and use the newer battery...
Check out garage and yard sales, EARLY, and you might find some good batteries for pennies on the dollar... :>)

I considered replacing then a guy told me about a place called Batteries Plus.
18 v dewalt battery was 89.95 at Lowes. Batteries plus rebuilt my old battery for 43.95. Haven't used it yet but was told they are better than new.
tried batteries plus.still too expensive

They are all too expensive. If you gotta have it you gotta pay it.
BP will rebuild for you, but then you're paying for labor. They'll also sell you the cells, and you can put it back together yourself.AitchKay
Lots of cells on Ebay for $1+ each.

Cool. Maybe I'll fix up my 2002 Festo that's been dead for two years...AitchKay

I got my batteries from these guys.
I even called to make sure of the type before I gave them my credit card number. I wanted two, they told me to try one and if it didn't fit to send both back and they would pay to replace with the right type. Fit fine in my B&D drill.
There are lots of places that sell batteries. I had two Makita drills with dead batteries and for about $35 each I am back in business with better than new replacements (more AH).
If you have a 19.5 Craftsman, I saw that they are selling a battery for it for just under $20 for a Father's Day Sale...
Might help in a pinch,
