How much can I expect to pay (per sq.ft?,per lineal ft.?)to have a solid surface countertop installed in my home (new construction)? Also, are there any brands which allow D-I-Y?
Thanks in advance.

Steve , I'm a certified Wilsonart Gibralter fabricator and our prices start at about nintey to one hundred dollars per lin. foot for a 25'' deep counter with one color edge treatment and a 4'' backsplash .Add about nine hundred for a two bowl integral sink .Two or more colors on the edge ,inlays , cove backsplash, or other custom features affect the price accordingly. Wilsonart requires that you be certified to purchase product as does Corian ,Avonite , and I believe Fountainhead . You may be able to buy Formica Surell or Swanstone as DIY and there are a couple more I'm not familiar with .Also price may vary by region I'm in Eastern OK. Hope this helps Chuck
*Same basic prices in No. VA. Chuck's prices are installed -- and it takes some skill to achieve that seamless look.BTW, on hearing the cost -- equivalent to granite -- we quickly turned to good old Formica with a beveled edge, $25/ft + $200 Americast sink. It may not last as long as the 20-year Corian&ct. but we will be sick of the color long before then anyway. Because the material is so inexpensive, I wouldn't hesitate to pull it up and put something else in when the mood strikes.
*$90 to $125 + sinks etc.is the going rate depending on how many seams, and the degree of difficulty, make up of backsplashes and edge pieces. This is probably not a DIY project. It takes some experence and skill to get a good looking job. I don't know of any materials that you can purchase without certification.

Steve, in our cabinet/counter shop in Oregon we fabricate Wilsonart SSV and Gibraltar,Pionite as well as Corian. We also do Wilsonart,Nevamar,Pionite, and Formica laminates. The Solid Surface is priced per lin ft. The SSV is $65,Gibraltar is $85,Pionite is $85,Corian is $85-$105 depending on color. The Wilsonart BD324 double sink is $525 installed, and a Corian sink starts around $600.The P-Lams run around $7.50 a sq. ft. A bevel edge for P-Lam is about $6.50 a ft.What you choose should be dictated by not only your wants now, but what about in 5-10 years, resale, the area you live, the rest of the house. There is no countertop that is the best. For most people P-Lams offer the most bang for their buck.
*Check out back issues of Fine Homebuilding. I know there have been a couple articles about using solid surface. One guy put a counter top and undermount stainless sink in. He did the work himself. It probably told how he acquired the material. He used a carbide tipped router bit for cutting. Also most articles I've seen on solid surface say the labor part is minimal compared to the material and its better to hire someone to do it and pass the liability/risk to them who is trained and licensed.
*In Jersey you can plan on spending $12.00 per linear inch for a 25" counter with a 4" splash (single color).
*I have heard about the solid surface laminates, but I don't remember the brand name or mfr. How much to these run per lineal foot and what do you think about using them as an alternative to (expensive) solid surfacing and (inexpensive, and not heat-resistant) plastic laminates?
