I’m about to commence trimming out to apply 3/4 x 10 bevel cedar siding to my addition to match the existing structure. The siding will be finished with a natural oil finish, so I can’t use that hideous butt and caulk technique developed for ‘fakewood’ siding. I could use rabbeted 2 x 6 for all the trim boards, but it occurred that I could save almost $M by underlaying 1x cedar trim with ripped strips of 3/4 CDX. Given that these strips would be dipped in the oil finish along with cedar trim and screwed in place, can anybody see a problem here? And forget about additional labor expense; time is on my side. How much seasonal shrinkage should I see in siding applied at 12-15 % moisture in the northwest climate.
