I’m about to start siding my new house. Hardi planks and azek trim. I want to have corner boards and a water table to trim out the house and freize boards up under the soffits. I’m thinking that the corners should be done using 1×3 fir strips and then topped with the azek trim boards. But… if I do this won’t the combined fir strip plus the azek trim end up thicker than the azek water table? I plan on using some type of Z flashing on top of the water table. I gather that fir strips are also used up by the soffit so that the hardi planks will slip under the freize trim. Does the corner board abut the freize if I use the fir strips or should it normally go under. Maybe I am making this too complicated. farmgal

We rabbet (at a slight angle), the top of the waterboard to accept the siding, and then run a strip of adhesive flashing across the top to make it absolute waterproof.
Are you using a rainscreen behind the siding?
Waterboard & cornerboards need a 1/8" gap between them to be caulked.
Siding needs a 1/8" gap also to be caulked.

No, you aren't making it too complicated, you are thinking thru the details and planning properly, a good thing to do.
You fur out everything the same amt. ( furring strips, BTW, not fir which is the name of a kind of tree/wood - the furring can be anything like scrap spruce, pine, fir, etc)
So if you want to fur the cornerboards out 3/4" to let the Hardie slip tuck behind them, then fur out the frieze and water table the same amount. I do the water table with short vertical scraps so water can drain away.

I am not using a rainscreen, just house wrap. Its just me doing the work and i'm trying to opt for good quality (bug proof, looks good, lasts) but not beyond my finances and beyond my skill level. Thanks for the fir vs. fur note. Since it is now hot and humid summer days I gather Azek needs to be abutted tight because it will shrink in the winter. Is the same true for the hardi boards?
