I’d like to get peoples’ thoughts on this. I have not posted this to john bridges yet, but I thought I’d try here first.
Getting ready to install ceramic tile for a bath and shower surround. Using a really nice ceramic tile from Dal-Tile which is in essence gray (antracite) in color. Tub and shower surrounds are white.
So here is the situation. I do not wish to use one of those pre-fabbed recessed panels that create a nook inside the wall for soap and shampoo and Daltile does not have a matching soap dish or corner dish in the color tile that I’m using. They only have white or almond and frankly I think using one of these would stick out like a sore thumb.
I was thinking of building my own corner dishes out of the existing tile. Cut the tiles into a properly sized triangles. Thinsetting them to both sides of a properly sized piece of durock, and finish the front edge with a thin piece of tile. When done the whole thing should be about 1 inch thick. I could sandwich another piece of durock to make it a bit thicker if necessary.
Once built, thinset the whole thing to the corner of the tile surrounds just as if it was a store-bought corner dish.
Has anyone tried this before or perhaps improve upon the idea?
I promise to post pictures of the finished surrounds when they get done.

What about using some real or synthetic granite? I am sure there styles that would work well with your tile. My counter guy always fabs up some corner shower seats for us and I am sure a small piece could be easily cut out of "extras" or drop offs.

I would post this queston on johnbridge.com. You can get almost instant replies from several pro tilesetters there.
I'll give then a try.
