Corner detail for removable porch scr…

| Posted in General Discussion on May 16, 2000 05:18am

I’m looking for a quick but strong site built joint for porch screen frames. I’ll be using 1×2’s and need a strong corner. I’d like to mortise or finger joint them but that’s tough to do on-site. All suggestions are appreciated.

      *I second kkearnys suggestion as my first choices, but will add for the heck of it, dowels or halflap joints with glue and screws/staples. Or even butt joints with countersunk screws thru the stiles into the rails. Then there is always corragated fasteners if you can hide them.Chuck

        *It ain't fancy but I did a bunch last fall with a glued mitre(waterproof glue) and countersunk screws...chopsaw and cordless drills...made a quick jig to hold one mitre while I predrilled, glued em up in the jig and snugged in the screws, tighten by hand. . . biscuits would require a lot of clamps and more time.-pm

          *Ryan,

          You might what to consider a half lap joint with either brads or #6 by 5/8" brass screws.

            *Ryan,I make mine with mitered joints, corregated fasteners and pu glue. They hold up great. Its quick easy and jobsite friendly.Tom

            *How large are the screen frames going to be?I personally use 2 x 2's when framing screen's for porches. They look better, can hold screen a lot tighter, and you can make a stronger corner joint.Just curious as to the size...James DuHamel

            *Most screens will be around 5'x8'. Thanks for the reply's. I'm probably just gonna miter, glue and screw.

          4. Guest_ | May 15, 2000 06:30am | #8

            *Can 1x2's keep the screen tight in a 5'x8' opening? Seems to be pushing the envelope here, I see trouble...What if you double them up with lap joints and overlap the joints? Can't draw the picture but maybe you know what I mean.Good luck,MD

            *FredB,

            For Unlawful Cardinal Knowledge. How's that? Or do you what to know that they use to post it next to the "Block" when you were strapped in. They seemed to only use it for women though, go figure, I guess men didn't apply??

            *Always figured all that stuff was just a story school teachers could tell to take the bite out of the word. But, I heard it was an abreviation for a british turn of the century legal term for prostitutes. Female Under Carnal Knowledge.

            *Pat,

            Where would I be without you! ;-}

            Being a person who reads what's in my mind as opposed to what's ACTUALLY on the screen does have it's disadvantages. I'm much better in person I can assure you. Anyway, I really do appreciate when you save my ass. Thanks.

            BTW do you remember the last time? Defecation as opposed to Deification.

            *By golly, none of you let me down. That is exactly it. Back in Merry Old England when the coppers would bring in a suspect they would abbreviate in the booking log: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. And who says,we have no couth?
