I’m in the testing waters stage of finding work around the Corning, NY area. My girlfriend and I are looking to move up there in the next couple of months and I’d like to hit the ground running when we get there. Anyone from around those parts?
I’m a seasoned remodeling pro with good customer/communication skills along with high end technical skills in all phases of the job except HVAC. I’m just completing a 37,000 sq. ft. warehouse conversion in Atlanta as the project manager and am looking for either lead work or something other than the bottom rung of the ladder. Thanks, Jerry

Get ready to eat a lot of beans......welcome to Western N.Y.
If I were you, I would look more towards Ithaca area for work. There is much more work there, and the market commands higher prices/better wages than Elmira/Corning area.
You can have my job!!
You like working for peanuts?
you'll get a 25c raise if you do top notch work!!!

Bish is right. Go to Ithaca. Went to college there and lived there another lifetime ago and there is good $$ in them thar gorges!
It looks like the move might be to Binghamton. Any chance anyone here knows about that market?
deffinetly no money there !!!!!
I've been there to visit a couple times didn't see much of the town.

I had a very difficult time finding a contractor to replace part of a roof which leaked. It took several months. Good clean work on a 4 year old house. So there is work to be had. But, I know nothing about the pay scales. The economy is neither boom nor bust now. There is some small but steady new home construction going on now.
Taxes are very high. There is no construction for smaller homes in the $150,000 range going on anywhere nearby, which real estate agents said would sell well. All the existing homes on the market in that range need work and people would buy new ones if there were any.
It looks like Binghamton is the place we're heading to. GF has a job lined up and is getting housing lined up for us. Now all I have to do is find work. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jerry
Vince Carbone is east of binghampton.

So what's wrong with Italians? I guess working for a 'yeller' down here might have prepared me for what lies ahead... Seriously though, any insight into what wages are like up there and what kind of market I'm looking at would be a big help in getting my head wrapped around the area. I've worked the midwest, northwest, and south so can fully appreciate the regional differences I might be facing. Oh the things we do for love...
I'm in Elmira
I had to go up to Ithaca to get a decent wage.
I've been reading the classifieds for Elmira/corning, Ithaca and BingHampton for a while.
B'ton has shown much more promise than Hellmira...
Ithaca is much busier.
Good luck!!

Thanks for the link and encouragement. I suspect the wage scale is going to set my teeth on edge but I'm working on some ideas to either supplement my income or become a full time venture once there. The job my GF looked at in Ithaca was a no go so she took the Binghamton position and spent the past weekend getting a house lined up. Now it's up to me to get me and my gear up there and get busy...
I live just north of Ithaca and find it a challengeing place to make a living compared to Atlanta, California, or any other booming city. For commercial construction, most of the contractors are from out of town so if you're not willing to travel, have a backup. Residential work is here but there's a culture of "yankee thrift" that runs deep. In other words, I find people on the cheap side and there's plenty of "wood chucks" (the northeastern term for red neck) that work for cheap and do crappy work. I do commercial project management and superintendent when its available and built a shop to keep busy in between.
Good luck,
Norse
Thanks for the heads up N. I'm not getting a good feeling about the job situation up there but fortunately, my GF has a good job (biochemist) to cover everything if it comes down to it. I just carried the ball the last six months of her chemo treatments while she was down and out and she's back in good enough shape to work now so I just want to do the best as is possible in that market. I've even considered commuting to Ithaca for work but the weather is a big consideration. I'm also playing with the idea of building a line of products to try to sell in specialty shops etc. but that's contingent on too many unknowns right now. Regardless, if I have to I'll go to work for a Lowe's or HD in a crunch. Problem is I couldn't maintain their standards of offering invalid information to customers' technical questions... Thanks again. Jerry
