This thread is in reference to the on dieselpig started last week about failed deck hangers.

About two weeks ago we “took in” a stray cat and kittens, an let them stay in my workshop a night. A strong odor of cat pee out there put an end to that. Here are some pics of the galvanized end of electric cord that was on the floor in the area with the worst odor. That’s 2 weeks of corrosion! Ate away all the galvanizing.
Something to think about.

is it the ammonia?
Hate to burst your cat pee bubble - but even human urine will do that to galvanize. Back when I was a young sprout & in Viet Nam, we had galvanized urinals in our latrine at Cam Ranh Bay. Stunk to high heaven! Corroded right away. Thus began the oddysey of the "Porcelein Urinal Caper." How we got it in that place is classified so highly that if I wrote it, I'd have to send a "Death Curse" along with it to kill anyone who reads it. Suffice it to say, we got our porcelein pee collector, and life became beautiful. Well, at least it didn't stink so badly.

Not only galvanized. I have in my shop a rebuild of a drawer and door from a client's cabinet. Re-veneer is complete. Finish close. The brass hardware I thought I could buff out, leaving only some minor pitting.
Wrong. Turned out to be brass plated copper. It's at the plating company now. I'm going to be very eager to see how well they did with the deep pitting. Right through the brass and into the copper. But what a great green patina on the copper! Unfortunately the clients didn't think the answer was to soak all the unsullied hardware in cat pee. Was kinda rough to the touch.
