A lot of insulation talk this time of year. Any opinions where cotton insulation falls on the effectiveness scale amongst the major products?
Cellulose and fiberglass.
Thanks, John

This afternoon, I saw the program "Stuff Happens" with Bill Nye...the science guy...
He said that fiberglass insulation manufacturing uses Formaldehyde... and because of that and other items like lumber and cosmetics had the same formaldehyde in there, that present day embalming of the dead now only takes HALF the amount it did 30 years ago....Because there is so much our bodies have already absorbed.... Scary... So, warm and sick with home pollutants or borate treated cellulose or cotton and stay a little colder??? :>)
Bill
I was responding to a Q about R-value is all. Cellulose gives you about 3.5-3.7 while Chopped FG runs about 3.2 and cotton is 3.2 to 3.5.If he had said that chemical sensitivity was an issue for him, I would have added that cotton might be the better choice. But on the issue of R-value, they are all in the same range with very little difference in actual performance.

Cotton kills. Ask any outdoors man, or cotton mill worker. Kidding aside, I don't see any advantage other than the "green" aspect. I think moisture would cause wild swings in R value, and cotton would take a long time to dry. But then, it may be treated to resist that.
yeah, if I were considering it, moisture loading would be an aspect to consider. But I've seen both cellulose and chopped FG water laden. I think any insulation except urethene foam is going to need replacement if there is a leak that gets it wet

I'm just thinking about high humidity, I wonder how cotton handles that.
Oh, I understand Piffin. I'm just a'pokin at you since you've helped me many times!!
Besides, "Stuff Happens" helped me learn I'm half preserved already!!!
Happy New Year, Piff,

How as a sweater or a shirt ? Maybe a nice warm blanket to snuggle under watching TV? <grin>
I think Piffin is right (hope it doesn't go to his head), but I was in an attic with cotton for the first time several months ago. It didn't have that creepy alien world feel like most attics with fiberglass do. You can kick the stuff around without sneezing or itching. If I could find it readily available here, I'd buy the stuff.
I agree with Piffin, about half.
My sense was the while it was easy to instal like Fiberglass bats, it was very dense - like foam. Air might flow through it... and I might shoot a monkee out my butt. Anything's possible given the right amount of pressure.
