Cove Rail & Stile router bit set….

jackstraw | Posted in General Discussion on May 10, 2008 12:38pm

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. I was handed a pix with what appears to be a cove (looks exactly like a piece of cove mould that you would apply to a fake raised panel).
The GC is telling me it’s a true raised panel and he needs it replicated in the foyer,DR,FR, stairs,&MB.
Sweet job, can’t find the profile anywhere.
Plenty of ogee, quarter round, classic, etc, but nothing that looks like a cove.
Can anyone help ???

Jax

I haven't searched the site but try

    http://www.routerbits.com

I think I have a 2 pc. set w/cove, if you come up dry,we can swing a deal.

EDIT: OK, I looked, no dice there, or in my stash. Sorry

Thanks, I don't know if it exists unless it's a custom grind.
I'm looking at shaper cutters w/ the same kind of profile. BTW , it's for 3/4 (1x) stock.Jax

Easy to hand make, except the cope. Maybe a masons miter?Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

    Have you checked Whiteside?  Costcutter?

I know it'd be a PITA, but could you run the slots and make it M&T, and run the cove profile on rails and stiles.

Go over to Knots and ask there.  I've found stuff there that nobody knew of here.

Maybe try looking at it from another angle.

Can you make the piece with multiple knives and a few passes?

try" freeborn" cuttuers or "FS Tool".  Both can be bought at Ballew saw and tool.

Ballew has pretty good price breaks and some smaller diameter sets  priced pretty low.  The "yellow" cutters are great(tantung material) but only us them on real wood, no mdf, ply, or particle board

"LRH King Cutters" might be another choice

    Maybe this one?

Am I missing something or was there a picture of the profile needed?

Is it the panel you need or a stile and rail set? Or both?

See if this comes thru. Now that I look at it real close do you think it's an applied mould ??

Looks built-up to me.  Need a door to really tell.

I agree, I recently did the exact same detail on those Ginko bi-folds I made, but they had flat panels. I just milled 1/2x1/2 with 3/8 corebox cove..both edges of a 1.5" blank and ripped the two moldings off with two tablesaw cuts.

He'd have to ajust a rip with a raised panel, to allow for the panel bevel.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I Agree also. but even if it is not it could be duplicated that way and once painted no one will ever know any better.

It's either a cope and stick with an applied mold, or an M&T with a mitered corner.

My money is on the first.

      2. reinvent | May 11, 2008 02:41pm | #11

Look at the top of the door. If the stiles and rails are square to each other its an applied mld. Otherwise a cope and stick door will show up on the end grain of the stile.

Looks like it might could have been done with a T&G set or mortise and tenon. Then run them through a cove bit and do a jack might at the jucntions. This first example uses stock that has a similar cove pattern on it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJV1bwEw-y0

I have that cutter (or one very similar) in my shaper bit drawer as I type this.  Try http://www.mlcs.com and http://www.rockler.com.  90% of my router bits and shaper cutters came from one of them. - lol
