Cracked Corian Sink @#$%#!!!

cameraman | Posted in General Discussion on February 3, 2005 05:12am

Back in 1999 we had Corian counter tops with under mount Corian sink installed.  Shortly afterwards we noticed small hair line cracks spider out from the drain hole that houses the garbage disposal. Didn’t worry, not to pretty, just thought they were superficial. Well last night 1 of those cracks went south!! Now runs across the bottom, up the side and within inches of the top.  Leaks too!!!  Before we call the installer what would be our options? Can this sink be repaired on site? Can this sink be replaced? What kind of warranty does Corian have on it’s products?  Wife not happy!!!

If any type of sink is repairable, it's a corian sink. Why not just call the fabricator/installer now and have them come take a look? The garbage disposal is suspect... sounds like it's putting too much stress on the drain hole, or perhaps it took a blow during or after installation.

Did you contact the installer right after the 1999 installation to ask about the small hairline cracks?  Is the installer still in business?

No, we didn't call the installer and I have not checked to see if he is still available. I just wanted to get some background info before I call, we didn't have the best experience with the company.  Is there any guide line for disposals mounted in Corian sinks, Do, Don'ts????

      1. zendo | Feb 03, 2005 06:03pm | #5

Call the installer, or another installer, by the looks of it it will probably be easier for them to replace the sink then to try to chase all the cracks.  Looks like a product problem.  Corian heals.

If you dont like the installer, its important to tell Dupont, because they dont want an installer damaging a good reputation.

        Relax, its Corian.

          Zendo,

Relax, I have to live with my wife!!! Right after we installed and all the problem, she went to a cut stone show room and found out for a small amount more she could have had granite and S.S. sink. She wanted all S.S. applanices but at the time only ones available were commercial units. Now everyone has them.  I know she will use this as a reason to get new tops, sink, and applainces.   I see it comming! I'm relaxed.  thanks for the info.

Corian and other similar products are well know for cracking around the drains. The problem is usually the plumber, tightening the fittings too much. This is often much worse with disposals, they put too much weight on the delicate area. If you decide to get it repaired or replaced, you should have supports installed to carry the extra weight.

After doing some checking I found out that the installer is out of business, it's Formica brand Surell not Corian. had to call Formica hotline, customer service will send a complaint form, I complete and return with proof of purchase, and then Formica will send out an indenpendet apprasior to evaluate the complaninte and determine coarse of action.  All the while we have a leaking sink, I think a pan under the sink and some duct tape I will be right back in business.

      thanks for all you comments.

All solid surface is not the same. After 8 years & 150 -200 Corian tops, most with integral sinks, never had a callback or warranty call on such a thing.

Your post rang a chord, as I also have spider cracks in both bowls at the drains. There are more of them on the disposer side. I contacted Avonite because of your posting, and I was informed that they had discontinued that integral sink for that very reason. They now have a different supplier and sink design. I'm within the ten year warranty, so they wish me to provide proof of purchase and a photo of the sink. The latter is more to determine the model than to evidence the cracks. They will either replace the sink if one of their current models fits, or they will offer me a buyout. If anyone has a similar problem with an Avonite sink, call 800-354-9858, asking for warranty information, or write Cindy at [email protected]. Thanks for the heads-up.

Same story, our countertop installer is out of business, called cabinet shop, they gave us Formica's hotline number. 10yr warr., they are to send out a claim form, fillout /return with reciept, they will send out an independent ajustor to determin if it's warr. work and replace/repair. Now we have to find the reciept!!!!!
