Can anyone help?
I consider myself an apprentice carpenter, eager to learn and master the trade. There are two things keeping me from continuing in this trade.
1) professional craftsmen seem hard to find and sift out among the others without seeing their day to day work.
2) how do you family guys (and gals) take care of the health insurance without working for a big construction company?
My dream job would be working with a professional crew building and remodeling homes while taking care of the family. Is this a pipe dream?

There are three ways that I know of:
SWMBO and I are both self employed and in our late 50's (I'm about to run out of my 50's - lol). We have our medical and dental coverage thru the NASE (National Association of Self Employed). The premium runs us around $800/month.
Any associations will have discounted rates.
If you belong, or can belong to some type, the rate is less because they pay as a group rate.
Or we call it self insured, its ok for small stuff, but a big accident can ruin you.
Your State may have a major accident emergency plan for not to much money.
