I really wanted to post this for the person that was asking in another thread ” How to get rid of ground squirrels” – but, of course even with the aid of the wonderful search function, I could not find that thread
Since Jim’s landscape thread was doing so well, I thought I would start another here for animal shots
Here’s the solution to that ground squirrel problem

The big bad wolf would like to help too - but, as you can see, he is not quite as industrious as the fox
Fantastic! Problem solved... Now how do I get rid of all these foxes and wolves? <G>

Man that's one boney fox.

http://www.hay98.com/
shouldn't be for long the way it's hunting !
Actually, if I remember correctly - the two pictures are of different foxes
Remember I saw a pile of ground squirrels on the side of the road and wondered what sick puppy might be piling them up. Then this fox comes running out of the ditch with another squirrel in its mouth. Drops it on the pile, picks up the whole mess in it's mouth and starts heading on down the road. Thats when I grab my camera and say "Don't imagine you get to see that twice in a lifetime."
Next week, I see the same thing again. Standard modus operandi for them there cross fox, I guess.
Think that was early spring.
I'll dig out some shot's I have of fox later in the season that look much healthier - when I can dig them up.

You guys are awesome! I just have one critter shot:
Sorry about this one...I just could not help myself...
(I did not take this one)
I'll submit these....haven't seen one on here yet....From Upstate NY....taken this past spring....
If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
Cool
I have a lot more critters to post - but, I don't have any of those
Up close and personal even
I've got a few more in the arsenal as well, but they're either hanging from the meat pole or getting ready for the fillet knife.....didn't think we wanted to show hunting/fishing pics here on this forum.....I started one of the "time off" type forums last week and not much response...guess we're all working harder than we need to....If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
Deer
My lil' contribution....

Critter tracks, found outside a cabin we were painting. The coon had walked through the paint dust on the ground underneath where we had sanded the window sashes.

Canada geese, getting ready to take off on their way south last fall; this gang spent the night sleeping on the water 50 feet west of my dock.

I call this one the 'mystery bird' because I wasn't sure if it was a partridge or a grouse. It was nesting in the bush about 5 meters off the backyard of a place where we were finishing a basement. Everytime one of us went towards the bush to dump sawdust, this bird would come charging at us to protect her eggs. We moved the sawdust pile off to the other side of the yard....

This is a mésange coming in for a landing on Ryan's hand last winter while we were cross-country skiing. He was feeding the birds some of our GORP during a snack break.
View Image
Finally, this little fawn came over to Ryan just as we'd gotten back to the trailhead from a backcountry hike last summer. He had nothing to feed it, but the two of them just sort of examined each other for a while, then the deer wandered off back into the bush.

Some nice shots Dino.
What a treat for Ryan to get up face to face with that fawn.
Here is a copy of a track that showed up on a hike one day - very fresh - wasn't there on our way through a couple hours before. Really should have thrown a coin in there or something to show the size - It was HUGE
Edited 7/23/2005 11:12 am ET by Shoeman
try to post that track again
That's not a itty-bitty black bear cub, heh, heh, heh....
I see black bear track and sign relatively often when hiking around here; fortunately rarely see the critter itself. They are too unpredictable for my personal taste. When they get 'familiar' and start visiting the garbage cans at the houses around the lake here, they get dangerous, even if they only weigh 300-some lbs....

Only 300 lbs!!!
They don't have to weight that much to cause serious problems. Course you knew that.
Doug
Yeah, I did know that, LOL. And not many of the black bears around here are that big. They can get up to 580 lbs and be as long as 6'2" nose to tail, although that's the top end of their size range.
But even a big black bear looks small set next to an 1100lb polar bear or a 1500lb grizzly. Alaskan browns, a subspecies of the grizzly, weigh in at 1700 pounds once they are fully mature. These are the world's largest terrestrial carnivores.

You take that bear pic?
I was gonna say 'Notice how fuzzy it is--that's cause I was shaking when I took it!'...but I cannot tell a lie. I 'took' that photo out of my Audobon Field Guide to Mammals; the fuzziness resulted from scanning a printed image.
There is nothing that size with claws on it around here. Although, I gotta say, if you happen to be dumb enough pi$$-off a bull moose you might not notice much difference in the final result....

I hear you about the moose thing. When I lived in Alaska, a lot of people from the lower would talk about the grizzlies, and were always suprised when I told them about how many deaths there were from moose trappling people. Can't remember the figures, but it was suprising.
However, as you can see here, not everybody's afraid of mooses....

One of the dumber moments in my life was seeing how close an elk would let me get for a photo while I was on my honymoon in Banff Canada. He pawed the ground at about 40 yards... Uh, honey, get back in the car and do not shoot this footage cause I just know it will be posted on the Darwin awards one of these days!
Nuff said Mr. Elk! S'cuse the disturbance I am on my way!
Hey, at least I had the sense to shut the flash off before I went out there to say hello!

When Kostello and I did our 70km hike in the provincial park here last summer, we followed a set of moose tracks for about three days, but never saw the animal itself. Then one day we paused at a trail junction to check the map and glug some water, and while Kostello was looking off to the west, I turned and looked down the cross trail to see where it was coming from.
Big-a$$ bull moose standing not 20 metres away, looking at me. I was so surprised I forgot myself and yelled, "Hey Bro! Look! Da Moose!" just like some dumb tourist. Duh....
Of course, my hollering scared the critter off; he turned and trotted quickly into the bush and by the time Kostello turned around to look, there was nothing to see.
I still don't know if he believed me, LOL....

HOLY COW......my wife and I saved one that had flown into the garage two Summers ago...I finally caught it..the little guy after it stopped flying around and was exhausted from the heat and being trapped I guess.anyway I wasn't sure if I even had it in my hands...when we got outside ,it was worn out and was just laying in my palm, no time for a shot , I held it for a few moments in the shade and then he just flew up and right to the feeder....we were both elated beyond description.

Now that I see there's a thread for photos like this, here's a fox that's taken to napping in my back yard. We're only 6 miles outside of DC, and while I'm not surprised to see a fox around here, I am surprised that it likes to hop a 6' fence and sleep in the ivy.Any naturalists want to comment on that?http://www.fatroman.com/FHB/Fox1.jpghttp://www.fatroman.com/FHB/Fox2.jpghttp://www.fatroman.com/FHB/Fox3.jpghttp://www.fatroman.com/FHB/Fox4.jpg

I took this picture on my way home one night last fall.
Its not that good a pic - there were about 20 deer in the field but I only got this one shot before they all headed over the ridge.

Did you get hit with a bunch of snow yesterday?

Snow and Ice.
I dont think we got all that much snow (maybe 3 or 4 inches) but the 40 mph winds yesterday/last night made it seam a lot worse!
They shut down parts of I-80 and were still trying to get everybody back on grid from last weekends ice storm. I think there are still several thousand electrical customers w/o power.
I dont work Fridays so I didnt have to go out this morn but it looks crappy from my living room window!
I am headed out right now though because there has been about 8 eagles spoted around here and I want to go down by the river and see if I can get a closer look.
Doug
Edit, I just went out to start the truck, I guess its a no go on the eagle spoting, the winds havent died down much so I guess I'll go find something else to do.

I'm in southern IA, near Red Oak. We didn't get any ice last week when you guys did, but we got about 4" of snow, which wasn't bad.
Since this is a 'critter shots' thread:

A few years ago we went to Toronto and visited the Science Museum.
in on of the Hallways between buildings was a glass enclosure with a small tree inside.
I stopped to look and read the plaque..
"xxxx tree and Mantises"
so I looked a little closer and saw a few.
then I realized there was DOZENS of them.
they were all the EXACT color and shape of the leaves..
Heck there coulda be a thousand of them!!!
VERRY cool predators..
but not ideal mates..I don't feel safe in this world no more I don't want to die in a nuclear war I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an ape man
there are the mantis egg cases everywhere here....sometimes they are attached to the metal siding on the barn. and I leave several patches of grass and weeds out back and they seem to flourish nicely.
We tend to leave everything alone, and have to deal with the bad insects as well as the good ones throughout the year.....

Nice shots.
Looks quite content there in your yard.
About 10 years ago, when I was working on the north shore of Lake Superior here in Minnesota, we lost a few of them. Before we got this house dried in, we would find them dead with their head stuck in the top of the pipe on the scaffolding. A shame - they're pretty cool to watch.
Were those pix taken at Rocklands Feeding Station in Jamaica? My DH & I were there many years ago - blew us away!
Not really sure where those photos were taken. Like I say, they are not mine. I forget where the email I got them in said they were from, but, seems to me it was in the midwest somewhere - Wisconsin?
We stayed in the car to take this shot, since I have a healthy respect for mama moose as well.
Great Shot - where abouts was it taken?
Jackson Hole, Wyo. We were renting a house for the weekend up the road from where this was taken. Two days later a young bull moose came up to 'our' house and sampled the vegetation growing along the porch. That picture didn't turn out as well because it was dark outside and we were taking it through the glass.
You never know what you will find at Sam's club
and they look so real
