This is a very compact set of stairs, the basic footprint is 4’x8′. 8 3/8 rise 9 1/2 run, tight squeeze, steep but still very comfortable to use. Also very narrow, 32 in treads, inspector allowed it since the stairs serviced a walkout basement.
Treads are bookmatched Curly yellow birch. Handrail climbs and winds around the corner. I didn’t plan it this way but it seems every piece of wood I put my hands on was curly so everything with the exception of the risers has lots of wild grain.

*closeup of baluster, column and rail return. This was a fast bargin basement set of stairs, 10 days start to finish plus 1 day install. One of those "She batted her eyelashes and I couldn't resist but build her something nice" kind of jobs.
*Armin: Looks nice....how does working with birch compare to maple? I know they are very similar looking, but I have only worked with maple.
*Stan, Birch has the same working properties as cherry, Curly birch is a bit finicky, prone to tearout but sands out very nice.
*Armin: That kentucky rifle I showed you in curly maple also kept me on my toes avoiding tearout. The medullar rayswhen curly are touchy at times.
