This is a continuation of my beaver built stairs posted earlier. The builder was saddled with having to box in a LVL beam protruding under my staircase. I thought it looked out of place and took it upon myself to doll up the end of the box beam with a bit of north woods creativity. I capped off the end of the beam with a piece of aspen bark, bored a hole into the end and set a carved chickadee in the nest, it’s mate stands guard on the balcony rail above.

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

Very clever, as always a joy to see your work.

Thanks Doug,
Initially I planned to plug the holes in the stringer with Maple buttons however I changed my mind after my wife looked at the sample, raised an eyebrow and walked away. The end result was custom plugs made from spruce limbs using a router jig to cut the tenons. I tried a tenon cutter but it just ripped the bark off and made a mess.
Armin: You post the neatest stairways. Nice work as always.
Thanks Stan, you do some pretty neat stuff yourself.
Armin you get the coolest jobs.............
Great work as always and thanks for sharing......
Hey.....is that a real stuffed chickadee or what?
Very clever idea putting the little guy in your stairs.....

The chickadee's are wood carvings, a friend of mine located a pair, at least I assume they are a pair, I guess we will we will find out next spring.
Armin:
Are those stringers maple? The grain is way wild...
Matt
The stringers are maple, the maple with no name. The locals call it bark pocket, it's from the hard maple tree, somehow the cells mutate and capture some of the bark as the tree grows. I call it Captured bark rustic maple, a good seller for us, looks cool but a bitch to work with.
armin... always listen to your wife... even the non-verbal communications..

Thanks Ron, the bomb huh. Never been called the bomb before, although I have been called the lightning guy on more than on occasion, as in flash of brilliance then nothing.
I thought it was a flash of brilliance, a loud noise, and then nothing. :)
Uncle Dunc,
The loud noise only comes into play after digesting a substantial quantity of pinto beans.
Mike,
always listen to your wife
Kind of impossible since I have selective hearing loss.

Thanks for the whimsy. It's good to get a smile from BT. Some of the threads aren't near so pleasurable.

Hmmmm, Can't really say. Lookin' for worms?
For how often I'm shooing birds out of my garage, I'd be ready to believe it was real on first glance. Cool.
Maybe you should make up bumberstickers: "Armin, Master Starbuilder. We give our customers the bird."

Ha Ha, One of my clients suggested I put it on my business card.
Nice job.
I have been known to give my customers, especially the ones with nasty attitudes, the bird too. I threw mine in for free also. Wasn't quite as artistic but it too was free expression.
They were somewhat less than happy until I let it be known that despite their complaining and critique of my abilities and intelligence, "any moron can see that you just have to replace a breaker not the whole panel", that I could get a replacement buss bar, we had replaced a similar panel recently, and save them about $700.
Very nice details.
Your work is always inspiring.
That's a cool effect. And possibly too natural (as in having to put a beanbag underneath to catch the cat . . . )
You are one talented dude. I, for one, am glad you like to share, 'cause I failed to notice any copyrights <G>
EliphIno!
Thanks Snorts, you are correct no copy rights on giving the bird.
Thats cool . Killing two birds with one stair. This tread just poped up on my computer today ,you posted on the 8th . I hate the prosperoless way to run a site.
