I removed a section of tiles from an apartment. This section of tiles was double tiled, tile on top of tile; the bottom tiles were set on cut back adhesive (black asphalt stuff with 3% asbestos!). The subflooring of the whole apartement is concrete and under this concrete floor is the boiler room. Apartment is over 30 years old.
I need to raise the level of the floor on the section where I removed the double tiles. The heigh difference is about 1″ – 1″ 1/4 +,-, approx. 24 sq feet. I need to raise the floor to make it even with the surrounding flooring so I can tile the whole floor.
My questions:
1- I do not want to disturb the cut back adhesive, can I just lay deck mud on top of the old cut back adhesive, trowel and set my tiles of top of that? Do I just mix it and pour it on?
2- If deck mud will not work, how about double layers of cementituos backing board and lay tiles on top it. If this works, do I just drill holes and use anchor to attach the wonderboards to the subfloor?
Any tips will be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance for your help.
