I have to install a one piece sink/vanity top that is 60″ wide. Unfortunately, the framer placed the wall studs 60″ apart and failed to make an allowance for the 1/2″ wall board on each side, leaving me with only a 59-1/2″ wide space. The vanity base can be easily trimmed to fit, but I do not have any experience trimming the vanity top material.
Can anyone suggest a method to trim the vanity top?

What's it made out off? Stone would be different than laminate, and that would be different than cultured stone, and solid surface would be yet another method. Don't make us guess, now :)

Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.
Opps! Sorry 'bout that. It is a Lowe's special cultured stone.

Is it a resin poured material?
We use ONYX marble which is a poured solid surface type of product. To cut one down in the past I've used a sharp 24T circular saw blade about 1/16" of shy where I want to end up and belt sand the last bit to the line.
Thanks. It is a ONYX poured resin. I was leaning toward the saw method, but wasn't sure what type of blade to use.
Not sure what Onyx is like, but have cut old school cultured marble with an abrasive blade in skilsaw....outside...with a dustmask.
I assume the end / ends to be cut will be against walls? You could scribe to fit with beltsander as Cag suggested.

We cut ONYX panels all the time with my Festool saw I don't remember what the tooth count is but it works great.
I'd think any 24T 7 1/2" circ saw blade would work so long as it's sharp, that we used before I had the festool
I've cut dozens of cultured marble tops with a thin abrasive disc in an angle grinder. It cuts easily and you can be very accurate.Cut the backsplash 1st then then side(s).You may want to take some off both sides to keep the drain/sink centered. Also be sure to bevel the underside of one end so you can tilt it in without marking the walls up.Measure front and rear of the opening and mark the top with a grease pencil.Cut 1/4"short.Wear a dust mask and safety googles and cut it outside. It will look best with matching end splashes and siliconed in matching white or ivory silicone (clear for some colours).Use alex latex caulk to attach to walls and cabinet base. If your nervous about cutting see if you can locate an offcut to try 1st.
cut it from the backside if you can.. I tried cutting a lav top once from the front and when you get to the backsplash it's a royal PITA if you start at the top
Not really answering your question, but can you cut the drywall to gain back the 1/2"?
Not a good option for me since the vanity is in a recessed alcove. I would have to remove the sheetrock all the way back (another 16") to slide it in. Also, the backsplash would present a problem .
You can be sure I really thought about doing this, but, because I hate finishing sheetrock more than anything else in the world (right after root canals), I was really hesitant about tearing it out.
