Have you considered fiber cement siding for you project it will hold paint very well and is probably a good fare cheaper in price than cypress just thought I would give you a shout.

Dave,
We've been using pine for years without paint problems. The problem with pine is that if you live in an area with high humidity and rainfall no amount of paint will prevent its eventual rotting. New growth cypress doesn't perform much better than pine. If you want a lasting REAL wood siding you should look to cedar or redwood and plan to paint all sides Good luck

Dave I agreed with Peter back prime those boards!
*Avoid wood altogether and go for Gerard's fiber cement proposal. The stuff has been around forever (ever heard of asbestos siding?). You can get it pre primed, raw or even pre painted. I recommended it to a friend building in NH. He used it on his own house and got it prepainted. Since it's blind nailed (usually with a coil roofing nailer) his house looked fantastic the day he finished. 15 year warrantee on the paint job too. AND it cost less than unprimed wood.I've sided dozens Perhaps hundreds of homes with everything from red cedar and redwood to cypress and mahogany. I'd go for fibercement now that it's available in our area any day of the week. From 5 feet away you can't tell the difference.

Nothing wrong with pine clapboards. Be sure to sand mill glaze (60 grit on a random orbit sander works fine), spot prime knots and pitch pockets with BIN, backprime with a good oil base primer, and use a good latex topcoat. A good solid color oil based stain such as Cabot's O.V.T is a nice alternative to paint
*I'm considering using fiber cement siding but want the look of mitered corners. I've seen metal corners on older masonite siding, but the new corners available are aluminum and not compatible with cement siding. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am renovating an old home and I want to use wood siding (painted white) instead of vinyl or aluminum. I've been warned about paint problems with pine clapboard, but have just learned that a local mill will do cypress clapboard siding. Will this hold paint good?
Thanks
