Dado on portable table saw?

builderhayes | Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 19, 2006 01:14am

Which portable table saw excepts 3/4″ dado blades? My DeWalt doesn’t, not 3/4″.

A stacked set or wobble?  Almost all will take a wobbler or split wedge type.

I have a stacked set, I'm not familar with the other types, how do those work?

How do they work? or How do they perform?

They work by skewing the blades, or blade on and angle creating an adjustable width dado. Freud has a pretty decent dial a dado or some such name, while Craftsman has a true wobble dado that is serviceable some work where a dead flat bottom is not required.

Performance is almost as good as a stacked set, but some more chip out can be expected on veneered stock, and just about for get melamine, unless ya tape it first.

Depending if the end of the dado or the face has to be dead clean, a wobble is a good choice, if ya have the $ and want clean cuts, go with the Freud.

Make sure you either have or make a proper throat plate for the width, it can get ugly fast if not.!

Arent wobbles harder or bearings and bushings?

Arent wobbles harder or bearings and bushings?

No, not really.  They are balanced, and in fact don't wobble, they are just tilted off axis.  The bottom of the dado is not as clean as the stacked or solid dados cut.  The teeth are made so as to cut parallel sides and a relatively flat bottom.

we musta got the special saws ....

cause my DeWalt can use both my stacked and wobble?

bet it eve said so somewhere in the directions? Both blades are 6" ....

got the wide throat plate for free because way back when Tool Crib had screwed up the shipping and I had them throw one if for free. How long has the DW portable been out? Been dado'ing since then ....

I never tried to run a stacked dado on my portable Ridgid.  I use a router with a straight edge in the field.

I'm mostly concerned about a lack of power burning up the motor.

Speak the truth, or make your peace some other way.

3/4" wide or 3/4" shaft size? I have a ryobi table saw I just set up for dado cuts. I used a 6" blade. Make sure you have removed all the shaft spacers first.

Believe it or not I was able to put a stack dado on my 8.5" Makita.  I made the wide plate for it and it wasn't like using a full size cabinet saw but it did ok and did the job.

Phoey on you'se all. I've got an old Craftsman table saw that wobbles no matter what blade I put into it.

Since it's so unusual, anybody want to buy it? think of all the time you could save changing blades!

The Porter Cable 3812S can run a 6" stacked dado blade up to 13/16" in width; I've got a Freud SD206. PC specifically warns against running a wobble type dado blade in the manual.

I was going to type exactly what JC21 just pointed out.... most portable saws warn against wobble blades. They also limit you to a 6" dado set (don't go with an 8").

It's got something to do with the electric brake that could spin off the larger diameter set. Boy, that would make a real interesting sound as it came apart inside the saw's belly.

    Scott.
