Damaged Appliance

mrfixitusa | Posted in General Discussion on June 25, 2008 08:28am

Today I was in Lowes and walked past the damaged appliances

They had a stainless steel dishwasher which the door was dented pretty bad

They had lowered the price 10% from $799 to $719

I don’t think anyone is going to buy this dishwasher in this condition and for such minimal price reduction

I would be interested in the Dishwasher for maybe a C note but not anywhere near what they are asking

Has anyone had any luck doing this (offering $100 on an item they are selling for $700)

Thanks for any input

you can get a new front panel for most dishwashers for around 30 bucks or make your own. I'm thinking lowes would rather not go through the trouble

now if you were to offer half a G note you might get lucky

I like your idea about changing out the door with a new one for a few bucksBut I don't want to pay $500That would be most of my welfare check for this month

They do bargain though on badly damaged stuff.

Got a DW for 30% off that only had scratches. (but relatively bad scratches, but could fix with sandpaper and a 39 cent can of spray paint - also 'damaged')

I saw 4 sheets of formica they had marked down only 10%, saw the manager, offered 1/2 price for all 4.

    Accepted.

Also, watch their dumptster, it may be there for free one of these days if nobody bargains!!!

Having worked for Lowes in the past . . . . . .OK, now that THAT is out there . . . Standard corp policy is to kick off 10% and then periodically reduce more and more and more as it doesn't move. SO keep an eye on it. It won't get to your price~ they usually trash stuff before they give it away~ but keep an eye on it. When it gets down to $400 or $500, then offer your C-note. But not to a salesperson- you have to speak to the zone manager or store manager (likely the store or ops manager for that deep of a discount). Odds are they will say no, but one never knows. I got a flat top electric range that retailed for $799 for $250 because it had a dent in the side. Bang it out with the rubber mallet and the drawer works, the dent is hidden since the range is a slide in unit. Got a $1000 stainless side by side for $400. Still had the plastic wrap and tape on the drawers inside. Never even plugged in. Story was it was a special order and when the delivery guys got it to the house- oops doesn't fit. The key is to catch the right manager at the right time when they are tired of tripping over the thing in the aisle. Offer cash and take it NOW. That's how I've had luck anyway . . .

Thanks - good adviceWhenever I go into Lowes there are usually 5-10 damaged appliancesI was just wondering - how do the appliances get damaged? Thanks again

"I was just wondering - how do the appliances get damaged?"You've seen the people that work at Lowes right? Go in there just before closing and look on the loading dock for the "night stocking crew". Those guys will scare you. They unload in a HURRY! Add to that any putz with a pulse can get their "official" forklift operators permit and That's how they get damaged . . . People in a hurry, don't care, and the occasional dropped off a truck during delivery . . . Good luck on that DW. . . .

The different levels of management at Lowes kind of sound like some of the different names they have and the chain of command at a casinoIELaddermanStickmanPit BossPit ManagerI'll try to go straight to the top when I make my "cash offer" I'm the guy with little or no money called the "Low Roller" at a CasinoAnyway, thanks again.

I bought open and slightly damaged (more skuffed than damaged) bundles of architectural shingles at Lowes once for $2 per bundle! I bought what I thought I needed, went back the next day to get more and they were all gone.

(I put them down at the edge of landscape fabric, then put broken concrete as a low wall, resting on the inner edges ot the shingles and infilled with mulch. I can run the mower wheels on the shingles and no grass grows under them. Shingles are still going strong and I did this about three years ago.)

I've low balled them before. About 50/50 on the results. Depends on the store and the manager. If i'm in the middle of a job an have just dropped 20 large in their store, they are usually pretty good with me.

    How bad is the dent?

Just get another front panel. Alot of manufacturers may even send it for free.

    Try it.

I was in one store and had one that was marked off some minimum amount. Looked at the paper work and it had been retuned and sent to repair shop TWICE. And it was missing the sound blanket, several sound baffels and IIRC some other minor parts. And it was a year old model. And the new model was cheaper than what they where asking for this one.

I took them that they had to do much better. After much waiting to talk to manger they offered 20% off.

Walked away. Was back in that store about a month later and by that time it was marked way down, but I don't remember how much.

Went in to another store and ask what the store was on several units that where setting in the "damage" appliance area, but no tag on it.

He put his head down at floor level and found a small scratch that could not be see at normal level and said 30% off.

    .
    .
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
