DANGEROUS but AWESOME!!!

Holy

check this out!!!!

First time I ever saw this. If you love the exhaust note of a Ferrari check this out. Professional driver hammers his way thru downtown Paris!!! Like some of the comments I think the engine sound and tires may be a little dubbed or enhanced? Still sounds nice though.

On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of  Paris early in the morning. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians and driving the wrong way up one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground.  If you haven’t seen this before it is a classic..

I felt the same way. I also could not believe he did not happen upon any police at all. On a closed course i'd be all over that, but on open streets that was a little too much.

Well, it looks like it was done around 5:30 or 6:00 in the morning. And I can recall being in Paris and leaving for the airport around 7:15 and being very surprised at how little activity was going on even then.Still, he darn near clipped a lady at 6:30 into the run. Neat to see, but I wouldn't want to view it in my neighborhood.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

dang, I've been looking for this, and don't mean to burst the bubble, but Lelouch confessed a while back that the car he drove was actually a Mercedes and he later added the Ferrari sound effects,

still a cool badazz thing to watch though,

Yeah that is what someone commented on ytube.

My question is if there was a sound overdub wouldnt they have had to run the same course with the ferrari? If not that was an awful lot of work to synch the sound to the film, so well that is.

No I want to beleive it is real. However there is a lot of talk about it being enhanced with ferrari sound and tire noise. Not to mention the talk of how fast is the car really going.

          Anyway it is still cool.Webby

August 1978 what so dangerous about driving 140 mph though Paris?
Early in the morning (Probably a Tuesday) Wrong way down one way streets? Run Red lights!!!Big deal!! No charges or arrest until it is shown in public movie house?
Why? Because Paris is empty!!! It is shut down !!!Nobody home!!!It's AUGUST!!! Vacation Month !!!Not a Parisian to be found anywhere in the city limits!!!Not even the Police!!!!A few stray tourist perhaps but that's all. All the Parisians are in Normandy or Provence or Burgundy or Alsace or Cannes, BUT NOT PARIS !!!
There is more traffic and congestion at the Bonneville Salt flats that day than in Paris!!! A tourist type slipped a couple of francs to act terrified for a sense of reality....the cops didn't even know it happened until the movie came out...SCANDAL Mon Deiu So much fun....

Supposedly the chase scene in The French Connection was run on a regular street without blocking traffic. The couple of near-misses were staged, but some of the other traffic dodging was not.

Of course in that case they had the ability to adjust the film speed a bit to make things seem a little hairier than they really were.

And probably it's not something the film co lawyers would let you do anymore.

    Hi webby,

hammers his way thru downtown Paris!!! Like some of the comments

From my wife - witnessed a motorcycle rider do something similar - found him dead underneath the back of a car he ran into a couple of miles up the road, little girl in the backseat was injured.

From my daughter - witnessed a car on the highway recently doing something similar and lost control as a vehicle in front made a signaled lane change - driver dead - vehicle he ran into contained 3 passengers of whom all went to the hospital, one was airlifted.

From me - I love the two girls above so much that if I ever get my hands on someone doing this in a public place, non sanctioned, I'll make Hanoi Hilton and water boarding seem like a kindergarten playground.

I have no problem if you want to risk your own life but when you risk someone else's you need to be taken out slowly and painfully but permanently as an example to others contemplating the same.

Get on a sanctioned race coarse, buy some land of your own, get permits and all safety needs squared away, do whatever you legally need to do but do not put yourself above the life sacredness of my family!

Has Pedro the Mule made himself clear?

    1. webby | May 15, 2009 03:32pm | #21

Oh it goes with out saying. I don't condone it AT ALL!!!

Titled it dangerous but awesome. I for one don't drive like that and don't appreciate people who do. Thats why the filmmaker was arrested. The driver would have been too if  Lelouch would have named him.

Perhaps I admired the skill of the driver but I am smart enough not to try that.

      Has Webby made himself clear!?!?!?

Anyways there is also a controversy over whether it was 140 MPH or 140 KPH.

Might have been doing only around 80, 90 MPH

Certainly if one were that interested it would be possible (assuming the film is running at normal speed) to reference some landmarks and estimate speed fairly accurately. The film suffers from the problem that Howard Hughes had with Hell's Angels -- speed is often not visually apparent due to the lack of a background to reference.

OK, so what! It's still better than double the legal limit. There is a reason that there are limits. It's called reasonable safety for 99% of what Murphy may throw at you. There simply is nothing awesome about a film that is distributed in mass to would be addrenaline junky inexperienced stupid mostly teen drivers that view it as "OK" because someone else has already gotten away with it.

According to another poster - No one accidentally still in Paris during vacation early in the morning. Heck that's when I'd be there, nice quiet peaceful time of year and boom.....get run over by some @$$4ole getting his kicks at my expense....geeez

My 3 cents adjusted for inflation.....AWESOME is this clip......makes a point.....builds adrenaline.....and "all party's involved" volunteer to put themselves at one anothers risks. That makes them "purposefully, intentionally, mutually involved". Even the camera crew involved in this film is aware of the conditions unlike someone in Paris out for an early morning walk.....and what if that pedestrian is deaf?

        Enjoy the following Awesome clip.......

here is the explanation in 2006 by Lelouch, it's in French but you get the idea

I was disappointed after this showed up since the original looked more scary, since it seems the sound fx added a sense of speed ...... the Mercedes looks to run at similar more normal speeds in some spots....too bad really

Lelouch debunks the film and from the comments we know now that he didn't drive that morning either

but don't look if you don't want to:

I remember reading about a public safety ad in Quebec.  Some teenagers filmed their friend blasting down a back road in his mustang, which he flipped, rolled, and killed himself in.

The family allowed the gov't to use it as a public safety message.

      It was fairly powerful viewing.

I'm just sick and tired of it. And the police looking the other way.

I saw a guy get hit on his bicycle yesterday right in front of me.

The car rolled through a stop sign. Oops!

Of coarse the car won as usual.

I just got back from visiting my family in L.A..

What a hell hole! Why? A large part of it is cars.

You know quite frankly I am getting about dam sick of this site.

The past two things I have posted on here have been blown way out of proportion and I have had to defend my character due to something someone assumes about me!!!!

I want everyone in this thread to understand me when I say I did not post the link because I thought the premise of the video was cool, it was not it was dangerous, reckless, illegal, and stupid. I am nearly forty years old and anyone who assumes I think driving like that is cool can f off. I dont drive like that and dont condone anyone who does.

I posted the link for others to view. I tend not to pass judgement immediatly on things like this. So I posted with information in the post designed to give others an idea of what was in the video because I personally dont like it when someone just throws a lnk up and says "hey look at this". I thought others might have seen it before. Also as I stated in another post i am not defending the driver but one can still appreciate the objective skill in vehicle handling.

To others not on my #### I am sorry for the tone and this is not directed at you.

I think this may be my last post on breaktime I am just tired of it. You can get info on here when you need it that is if you can weed out some of the smartazz comments and critical judgement and bickering that dilute this site.Webby

Would you believe that people are less judgmental if you post in the proper section (ie, the Woodshed Tavern)?...No, I didn't think so, but thought I'd ask.

I think you're taking some of the comments a little too personal.  A lot of the criticism was directed at the imbecile who was driving dangerously (supposedly).  Not at you.

No need to go away.  Just thicken up your skin a little and be glad that your post inspired so many comments... and besides, I still want to know whatever happened with that cell phone charger.

        webby,

You know quite frankly I am getting about dam sick of this site.

The past two things I have posted on here have been blown way out of proportion and I have had to defend my character due to something someone assumes about me!!!!

Let's see, you come to a web site focusing on quality home construction and post about something completely irrelevent......which is not necessarily a problem, none the less it is disregarding the intended purpose.

You then specifically request feedback but since it's not the feedback you dreamt of you're now upset......

I want everyone in this thread to understand me when I say I did not post the link because I thought the premise of the video was cool, it was not it was dangerous, reckless, illegal, and stupid.

This did not come out clear in your first post on the subject.....

Since you thought it was awesome for someone to blatantly break the law and endanger innocent bystanders, it is the simplest conclusion to draw that you are glad this was filmed for your entertainment.

Had you posted the link and ask for support of bringing the law down on such recklessness, then we could in your words - "Assume you were against it".

Do not ask for feedback without parameters and then get all ticked off when you get it.

          How about this--

Since you assumed I was in favor of the content of the film. How would you feel then if I assumed from your screen name that you were a mexican and then presumed to judge your character based on racist and ethnic stereotypes. Dude you neeed to lighten up. Im sorry that you have lost good friends in accidents or see people commiting traffic violations every day and are powerless to do anything to stop it. I see the same thing I drive too. If you're that wrecked about it get our #### off here and enroll in the police academy and become an officer of the law.

Otherwise as Bosshogg put it stop standing on  my dick. I didnt' do anything to you however you took something personally that I put on here. Well let's edit this again.....2 hours with a chainsaw can change an approach, I'll try to keep the sweat off the message paper here.

            webby,

From last post --- I didn't ask for feed back

From first post --- First time I ever saw this. If you love the exhaust note of a Ferrari check this out. Professional driver hammers his way thru downtown Paris!!! Like some of the comments I think the engine sound and tires may be a little dubbed or enhanced? Still sounds nice though.

Musta read it wrong.....I have been notified that the comment portion was apparently a part of the youtube info

Since you assumed I was in favor of the content of the film.

Well, let's see you did put the word "dangerous" first so I'll take it upon correction that that was your way of stating that it would have been way cool without the illegal stupidity so I stand corrected as to your first intent.

How would you feel then if I assumed from your screen name that you were a mexican and then presumed to judge your character based on racist and ethnic stereotypes.

Not sure how you are corrolating this but I will say I think highly of the vast majority of Mexican's I've been blessed to know. All went through the process of obtaining legal entry, work their tails off and intentionally speak English in their homes so their kids will have an even better opportunity than they did. Spanish is still part of their heritage and is spoken but it's not a priority. Our daughter is fluent in Spanish to the point that she has far surpassed her hispanic friends in the written language and normally speaks to them in Spanish while they speak to her in English...pretty funny to listen to.....Dark haired, dark complexion, English Speaking....Blonde haired, pale face, Spanish Speaking.

Sorry to disappoint though.....no Mexican here....though I have a large number of taste buds that think they are.....alas that's one ancestry I didn't inherit in my list of six.

obviously this piece doesnt agree with you, TOUGH. There is still a thing in this country called free speech, and freedom of expression

Freedom of speech, hmmmm, I express my freedom of speech and you get mad....that's very interesting.....please tell me more.

            Agreed.

If proper safety precautions had been in place for the filming; I would completely and entirely concur with webby "Awesome", without those things in place......well I've made my point previously.

I know not if there be a mule but if there be i admire his Panache and sprit, Thus will place his mule up there alongside Sheps Mustang.I dare say riding in a Mustang would impress the young maidens more so then riding a mule but placing a feather in ones cap would add a dash of gaiety!!!

I wasn't beating on webby. I see cars doing stupid, dangerous, life threatening things just about every day and I'm sick and tired of it. Period.

The police won't do their job and I'm not allowed to take the law into my own hands.

So the only thing I can do is to speak up every time I can about it. and that's what I do.

If anyone doesn't like it they need to take a long hard look at their contribution to the mess we are in with cars.

I'm making a stand and i won't make excuses for it.

A friend of mine died recently because a big truck killed him dead.

Once again the truck won. And my friend is dead.

I really am sorry to hear about your friend..but you're strident about something that was filmed.....filmed....... 30 years ago, and wailing on a guy that wan't even therethe moviemaker even fessed up that the whole thing was rigged, different car, dubbed sound, heck for all we know the entire story is a fabrication.

    never saw that before ...

    pretty cool to watch.

I do think the motor revs and brakes is completly fake and added after the fact. If U look to the side in most shots they're not going all that fast. Especially when they encounter trucks or people on the sidewalk ... people who they were never close to actually hitting.

To me ... that Ferrari fit into some pretty small spaces ... I'd guess it was all filmed from a motorcycle at speeds no where near 140mph that blem thru a coupla red lights.

    Still fun to watch.
