Hello all,
Older ranch home built in 75. Daughters bedroom is directly over garage. (Master is as well) Those two rooms are over the entirety of garage.
My little girls room has a old house smell that the master doesn’t. ( We put a hepa filter in her bedroom, no change.)
1. Is it reasonable to think insulation over time has absorbed garage smells.
2. Could odors be coming up?
3. I’ve seen when they build tight new homes they often address this. ( Risinger covered a build where he addressed the garage vapors)
4. I’ve quoted out new batts for the space… is there a Poly that I should look into?
5. The garage area is a month out from being repurposed into a gym… no chemical or fuels or equipment will be in t he area.
6. The smell isn’t garage, gas smell. This is old house odd …. quasi musty… sometimes cigarette like…. it’s odd.
Thank for reading this far… and any insight thank you!!
Have a great week.

What purpose did that room serve under the previous owner(s)? My SO can't quit the nicotine habit (cigarettes) so when we go to sell, her (smoking) room/office will have to be stripped and rehabbed. I doubt that paint alone will kill the lingering odor. Or perhaps that room had been occupied by an elderly bed-ridden person for a fair amount of time. No offense meant to the elderly.
Great question. Also served as kids bedroom.
is there carpet in the room? how old? how about curtains or drapes. anything made of fabric can retain odors. Could there be something in the attic space over the room that is getting wet periodically?
