Most courtyard gates have two problems which are generally not encountered by entry doors. First, the gate is directly exposed to water, and lots of it. This means that the gate's dimensions change more over the year than the door. Second, gate posts are often not well-braced, so they move around as the ground's water content changes, or freezing happens. Taken together, this generally means that the gate needs a larger clearances between it and the framing around it. Standard entry-door hardware may not span these larger gaps.
