Deck design / balusters

confused2 | Posted in General Discussion on July 30, 2008 05:35am

I am looking for interesting deck railing & baluster designs for the cottage. Code here is that balusters must be vertical, not horizontal. Thinking about doing aircraft cable so as not to impede the view, but the cottage is kinda timberframe / craftsman style so not sure that will blend. Anyone have ideas or pics? The other choice might be the simple black aluminum ones. So far,I have only found them in 10 packs – at a hefty price through Dekorators or the like. I gotta think you can buy these bulk somewhere or have them fabricated.

Attached is something I put together on our first house.  Simple but kind of craftsman.

Thanks for the links - first time I have seen them sold by the pallet - which is what I think we will need.

I think you'll be very disappointed if you feel the deckorators are a hefty price. Those 10 packs (and I assume you're talking about the straight balusters) are around $18 so with the caps to attach them you are at around $2 per baluster. The only thing you'll find less than that is pressure treated and good luck with those when half will twist and bow.

For scenic views deckorators make some others but I'm sure the are more than the straight blacks. http://www.deckorators.com/DeckRailing-Balusters.htm

I've used the deckorators and the quality and ease of installation is excellent.

If that is the price in the US, I might have to make a trip down get them. In Canada, the ones I have found (and they are a different brand) the 32" are $3.09 per baluster plus taxes (12%). I guess we shouldn't have built so much deck :)

      Thanks!

HD sells the black metal pickets. Sorry, don't know the price, but worth a look. I think for a craftsman style house they are a good idea. People sometimes over elaborate exterior wood handrails, which can detract from the house itself.

Thanks, I agree - we want to keep it simple and non distracting. That is why we were thinking maybe the aircraft cable, but that might be too modern looking, the black is simple & nice.

            I like this design.

The copper is very nice -  Did you do this? Is the copper treated or will it patina?

          3. fingersandtoes | Jul 30, 2008 10:09pm | #14

It would look good with a patina too. But how do you stop crack-heads from stealing the pickets?
