We are building a deck with guardrail posts attached to the outside of the rim beams. Is there any real advantage to using treated versus untreated for the posts? Most of the treated posts I have seen recently have pretty significant damage on the edges, which makes them pretty ugly.

Is anyone aware of a means of keeping water out of the join between the posts and the rim beam, to try to avoid potential for rot?
