In the current issue of FHB No. 189 on page 60 (Accent lighting for your deck) is on the upper left side a picture of deck railing that I really like. It looks like 3 metal pipes that are close together, than there is a 4″ space to the next set. This article was done by Justin Fink.
I am in the finishing stages of our covered patio right now but still haven’t gotten the right idea for the railing.

I've made similar railings using 1/2" bar. The ones I did for inside I used a wire wheel on for a brushed look and coated with clear lacquer. For outside HD sells powder coated pickets and the pre-drilled cedar top and bottom rails. I like the metal pickets on houses with a lot of cedar, where more wood in the railings makes the whole look too heavy.
