Do I need to get 100 percent of all the old finish out of all the cracks, or will about o95 percent be ok? The old finish is of the gray finish and will be finished with the same color, but a diffenent brand. I have and will not power wash the deck. I can’t seem to get it 100 percent of by sanding. thanks

What's your goal? Just to apply a new coat of stain and/or varnish? If it's the same color, you need to get off anything that has failed, so scrape off any varnish that has flaked or peeled, and remove any weathered wood. The stuff down in the gap between the board may be ok. And yes it is difficult to remove.

I'm trying to replace to old stuff with Silkens. Getting down between the groves in not fun. Its a cedar deck, but maybe I should of power washed first and then sanded. Its really in tight around the knots. Well, back to sanding. Steve
