Hi all,
I was hoping to have my basement dehumidifier drain by itself, but the only drain I have available is the washing machine hookup to the main drain (see attached picture). I could locate the unit high enough so that it is almost at the top level of the existing pipe. Can I attach the drip line to this pipe just low enough for gravity to do its job or is that going to cause a problem with the washing machine draining?
If it is possible, anyone have a suggestion on how to make the connection? The dehumidifier has a standard hose hookup.
Thanks,
-Pete

put a wye on top of drain pipe ,place hose so as to have a 1 inch air gap between fitting and hose ,this would be my best guess
You might need a backflow check valve so that the washer machine doesn't pump water at the dehumidifier.
I have done this very thing altho I had the dehumidifier draining into a condensate pump. The pump pumped up into a horizontal 2" pvc pipe with a backflow check valve (pvc with a flapper inside). This pipe tee'd into the drain pipe for the washer.
Between the check valve and the condensate pump I had 6 ft of 2" pipe to act as a buffer in case the washer was pumping at the same time condensate pump decided to discharge.
Wow that's some old plumbing.
I'm sure you don't want to hear the -- by the book way---
You could cut the stand pipe just above the trap, and install a larger pipe.
To incorporate 2 hoses going into it & I see height restrictions for a full 1" air gap as noted you coud whistle cut the hose so part is below opening & part is above opening. This would give you an air break.
Thanks for the info. Could you clarify what you guys mean by the air gap?
Air gap is a vertical unobstructed clearance from the lowest point of the pipe to the highest point of the drain.
Air break is a physical separation of the pipe opening to the drain opening.
Both of these are used to prevent back syphon if the drain were to back up & overflow.
Leave the unit on the floor and install a condensate pump.
