Are there any trim carpenters out there that prefer a Delta Sawbuck over the compound mitre saws or SCMS? Ihave owned and used one for several years and can’t seem to wear it out. I was considering replaceing it with Delta’s slider that comes with a stand, but when I think about it the slider wont do anything that I can,t do with the Sawbuck. Any opinions?

I wouldn't say I prefer a Sawbuck over other saws on the market, but I own one. When I bought it, it was the only trim saw at the time to cut large baseboard and crown molding. The Sawbuck is more or less the grandfather of today's compound miter and SCMS. I believe I read that Delta discontinued it last year. I'll probalaly stock up on brushes and bearings and retire it to aluminum fascia and soffit jobs. It also works well as a cut off saw for the shop in leiu of a radial arm saw. It has served me well but I will not miss the end of the day when your on the second floor and it time to pack up. The 12" Dewalt is nice but it's another blade size to contend with. Since I have a 10" table saw and chop saw, I plan on replaceing it with a Makita LS1013. You might want to review the Aug/Sept issue of FHB if you're in the market for a new SCMS.
*Hello fellow Mad Dog,I wanted to add that I love my sawbuck for certain things. I like the portability factor and how easy (quick) you can change the bevel settings. But for really precise trim work, I can't say enough about the deWalt 12" slider. What a great machine. My advice: forget the Delta compound saws. They are really inferior. I'd stay right there with the Sawbuck!Good Luck to you,Other MD
*still have my old sawbuck- like MD it was the only thing out there at the time. but what a pain in the ass- awkward to get thru doors or up stairs, slide the work only from the side, always had to recalibrate the bevel- both my Hitachis and my makita sliding compounds are better machines- handier, more precise, and so far just as reliable....i use the saw buck to cut kindling- the guardmount broke a few years back so now it is a real 'limbing' machine!
