Have any of you used Dens-shield by georgia-Pacific? It is a new tile backer board that is supposed to replace cement board. My client at my next bathroom job is asking about it. It is $1 less than cement board for the same size.
It also comes in full 4X8 sheets.
If any of you have used this, my question is, is it as good as cement and will it take paint the same as gyproc???

Just trying to keep this up for a while longer.
Anybody??? or is this so new I should keep clear of it until it's tested????????
This was just discussed a little while ago at:

Hope it gets you started.
I have used Dens-Shield for the first time doing a 25K bathroom for a client. It is a vast improvement over the old concrete backer board. It is easy to carry and even better, it cuts and machines with ordinary drywall tools. I will never use Wonder board again. I checked with my tile guy and he said that the stuff is bullet proof. Good luck!

i have used it and i love it. dont know about the price you quote though. we cut up a chunck and threw it in a bucket of water about a year ago, looked good bout 3 months later ( core still dry )., gp says you can use it on floors but i am not that brave.
I've used Durock, Hardiebacker, a product from Certainteed that looks just like Hardiebacker, and Dens-shield. To be clear, I've only used all of them once or twice each. But hands down, Dens-shield is just amazing. The rest are a pain.
But why would you want to paint it? I suspect it wouldn't take paint that well, but then I've never tried.

Thanks to all, I will give it a try.
To Rich, The paint question is for the joint between tile and painted wall. If it dosen't take paint well then I will treat it like cement board and let the last tile end on the wall board. So the painted surface will not show the joint.
Thanks again.

IMO it works as well as anything else with the added bonus of the waterproof coating. However the key to it lasting is following the manufacturer's instructions to the letter when installing it- there are a few differences there from cement board. And make sure to seal any punctures you may make in the waterproof coating- water gets in the core and you're finished. As an added incentive, I believe GP is offering a lifetime warranty on the board- assuming installation is done to their spec.
I've used it a few times and like it very much. When I need heavy duty waterproofing though I use cement board with a trowel-on waterproofing membrane.
I've benn using it for years. I love it I love it I love it. Vinyl side out is also the side to score. Search the archives you should find PLENTY of discussion.
