dense pack cell with plaster/lath?
Hi Folks,
The insulators are here and now they say they don’t like dense packing cellulose on plaster and lath because the insertion tubes tend to knock out the plaster keys and cause blow-outs. I read a post somewhere else that said one insulator doesn’t worry about blow-outs only on plaster and lath because it’s so strong.
Any opinions (in a hurry :-P)

I think the key here is to use a bigger hole and smaller tube.
Lath and plaster is much stronger -if you don't knock off the keys that is.

I did cells in my own house behind L&P, with no problems.

The installer is either hiring gorillas or they are just in too big a hurry. Plaster is tough if you are careful.

don't worry!
I am no expert but the local insulating contractor that did my house said as long as the plaster is in good condition (no existing cracks or previous water damage) it is no problem. On my house not a single case of blowout and it is old plaster.
I've seen cells blown into a lot of old plaster walls - even with old horsehair plaster, and never any problem like that. I'm thinking either that outfit had one bad experience and they are gunshy, or they have some very careless installers working there and you should be gunshy

thanks, all. My computer got infected, so I've been having problems, but I did catch your notes that supported some things I found online. I think it was more that they wanted to get out of there; one of the crew had to catch his daughter's softball game. Maybe they did have problems once or twice; I know some of my walls have show some looseness with plaster keys that didn't drip down the lath, so it was more like surface glue than a good lock. And when that happens, the plaster tends to crack also. But I think horsehair, with all those fibers, tends to hold together even when cracked, and the wood lath should give good support. In any case, I got them to do the insertion, and they dialed up to about 3.0, and everything was holding, last I knew. They couldn't finish yesterday, and had to come back today.thanks again,
