I am leaving my job as a designer at a residential design/build company on the coast of Maine near Portland. They want to replace me as soon as possible. The ideal person would have some school training in architecture, some hands-on construction experience, and some CAD experience. The company is seperating the design business from the construction business and expect the design business to grow significantly, so it’s a good opportunity for someone who wants to get in on the ground floor of a growing company.
It is a good company to work for–very pleasant people, a beautiful office in a great location on a harbor, nice clients (mostly), designing everything from kitchen and bath remodels to million dollar homes. An average job for us to design and build is a $250K master bedroom/kitchen/familiy room addition. The company specializes in traditional-looking buildings that look like they belong in their surroundings. Many of our clients bring with them Sarah Susanka’s books as well as The New Cottage Home or similar books, and we try to follow the design tenets of books such as those. Natural materials, smaller/better designed spaces, good proportions, comfortable spaces–if you like to design places with those elements you might feel at home here.
Why am I leaving such a good job? I am a carpenter at heart and have an opportunity to work in another state with my brother. Being indoors all the time is hard for me, and although producing designs is fun and rewarding, I am more comfortable on a job site. But I can assure any potential applicants that it is a good company and a good opportunity for a designer or architect. The job will also be flexible for the right person; everyone in the office is multi-talented so if there is one aspect of design you are more comfortable with, be it CAD, sales, or whatever, the group will morph to accomodate you.
Let me know here or by email if you are interested and I will pass your information on to my boss.

Congratulations,Mike, on knowing how to follow your heart. I hope it goes well for you.
Tempting job it is.
Excellence is its own reward!
Thanks Piff. My brother and I laid reclaimed southern pine floors for 11 hours today. My back is asking me why I gave up that comfortable office chair, but my heart is happy.

"My heart is happy...". God bless you, brother! I'm a recovering attorney myself, and I hear what you're saying about being trapped indoors. It's been 2 years and I haven't yet missed putting on a suit & tie and bullying people on a daily basis...if I get mad I just drive the nails a little harder and soon I'm o.k. again.
Mike and Chad you guys should chip in to the "Who tells you your a carpenter" thread.
The world definately needs more people who make a living with thier hands.
Welcome to the greatest profession on earth!!Mr T
Do not try this at home!
