Hi,
I am in desperate need of very qualified people who deal in exterior trim installations with Azek/wood.
I have scaffolding up until next Thursday and I need about 2-3 people to help finish this exterior trim project. The other worker injured himself on a different job site and cannot work on my exterior molding. It is the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and I need a rally!!!! I have to meet this deadline. Otherwise I am going to be charged heavy fines.
I cannot stress the urgency. I am hoping that there are people out there who are looking for $$ for work until Wednesday.
Please call 201-696-7737 for more information or 917-750-8836.
If you can work this Sunday, GREAT, if not, Monday – Wednesday.
The location is Montclair, NJ 07042. It is 30 mins from NYC via car. It is right across the street from the Decamp bus stop or NJ Transit bus and is 3 blocks from NJ Transit train.
Thanks.

Um, you need to clearly state WHERE the project is. You should fill out your profile, by clicking on your screen name above, but ALSO you should EDIT your posting to show city and State.
Good luck.

I'm in South Plainfield, but I couldn't start for a couple of weeks. Someone else recently was looking for help with outdoor trim up your way. Is this the same project?
I have to be honest- it's unlikely your going to get someone good on such short notice. Even in this economy, the good contractors are still working.
Why are you going to have to pay fines if the work isn't done?
Yes this is one in the same.
The condo association does not want to pay for the scaffolding anymore as the roof project is done and they want to take it down as it hurts the curb appeal. If the work cannot be completed on time, they will charge me for every day the scaffolding is up. The guy who posted for help really has some Murphy's law with the hired help, so it is not his fault.I am glad to read that there is still work to be found for the good contractors, however you never know unless you try. I have to exhaust all options. The person who posted the job is currently working alone and cannot check his fine homebuilding account, so he asked me to write this posting.Even if someone could work one or two days, that is more than what I have. The building is a landmark building and I installed new windows and revealed transoms that were hidden. If you know a friend who can afford to work a day or two who is good, please do.He/she will be working with a very, very knowledgeable guy who needs help. Thanks for inquiring.
how about the two helpers that were working with the guy that got hurt???

Actually a person from breaktime just left the job 10 mins. ago We made good progress, but he had to go back to CT to begin another job and the other help is not here because of an injury..Explained previously why the other two workers will not come by. This team was recommended by the wood/azek supplier.
One option may be to let the scaffold go down and rent a boom lift to complete your project when you have someone lined up (if it will work). Whichever is cheaper. Where I am at mechanical lift rates are way down. Mike
Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, big wheel turn by the grace of god.
Hi,
Thought about that , but the town would require me to hire a police officer to watch, that's why the scaffolding is the way to go.
I am only maybe an hour from you(Westchester).
Counting myself I have 3 good carps, we have plenty of work, but make me an offer I can't refuse, and I'll fit u in. Take into account that I am not licenced in NJ, not sure if my insurance will cover me there either.
hi,can you call David at 201-696-7737 to discuss rates today? Thanks!
Hi,
Can you call David at 201-696-7737 to discuss today? Thanks.
Just curious. Who was the guy from Breaktime? Sounds like he's pretty cool to ride over there on short notice.
Crip walking across the net.
I do not know his breaktime screen name, but his name is Tom from CT and I paid for his hotel to stay here.
I'm not sure who that is right off the bat. But that's the nice thing about this place. You can usually come up with a solution to a problem some how some way.
Good luck.
Crip walking across the net.
Why does this seem more like a Craig's List post than a Breaktime post?
Sorry for the OP, but it seems her injured installer would be the one rallying the troops.
Mike
Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, big wheel turn by the grace of god.
Listen, I am new with this and regardless of the injured worker not rallying his troops, I am in this situation and need assistance. He had two helpers and they are not capable of doing the work on their own.I have one guy, but he needs help. I need help and if you can help....GREAT! Thanks!
There are several braktimers in your area.Hopefully, one will show up here...My cat speaks in tounges...You are always welcome at Quittintime
Do you think these breaktimers will call? How does one reach out to them?
I think you're doing it now, obviously a bad time with the fourth, but expect to pay $50-80 per hour for a good tradesman, maybe more depending on your exact geography. I wish you the best.J
The rate range is fine as long as the skill set is represented. I have no problems paying for the required level of technical expertise.
you are reaching out to them....

"Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints"
Here's one that was posted recently where I live. From the sound of it they want it done real well, won't hire a contractor, and want to do it themselves. Maybe I'm wrong but that is how it sounds to me.
I could do the work but would want to do it myself or with my crew which I don't have. And if they want it tight, cut the stone! I can't spend all day looking for the right stone for each spot. And I need a lot of extra stone. the list goes on.
Experienced flagstone cutter (or can dictate exact cuts): I am currently in a flagstone project that I need a new commander (ex-military would be great!) that can pay attention to detail and lay LOTs of stone well with minimal cutting. However, if you do need to cut...I have a Stihl water cooled cutter with diamond blades that goes through them like butter!!! Everything is already dug up, layed out and here with a plan. I just need an experienced cutter that can dictate what is good work and what isn't and make this project happen when I need it done now. It has already gone on way too long considering the amount of labor and resources I have at my disposal for it! Unfortunately I have put myself into the position of working with two people whom I am personally friends with and it is been difficult to express how detailed I want this work to be and how soon I NEED it done, especially since I completely dug up ALL the work that a previous team did. Considering the amount of money I have already spent on this project (you don't want to know), I know that I am not being unreasonable to ask for it to be the best it can with the amount of rock I have to choose from....with actual fossils even. Many of my beautiful fossil rocks are getting needlessly chewed up, but I personally do not want to keep being that "####" who keeps having to keep "advising" what I want and the need for that attention to detail there...set in stone for all time..... to look at as a daily reminder .... forever. Plan on keeping this house for a bit. The cutting noise is incredibly disrupting to my business at the moment and this point is NOT getting accross and I am done trying. So I need someone to take charge of the saw...especially since they left it out in the rain today when they left knowing it would rain. I need this project done in two weeks and based on past progress, I don't see this happening without a new commander that can see eye to eye with me personally and get things done. I run a business out of my home and it is seriously getting in the way of it right now with all the cutting that shouldn't happen. I would like to remain freinds with these people, but at the same time, I want to be happy with my home and conduct my business unhindered (it is primarily telephone support so you know how that is going over with ALL of my employees). They two will make great experienced assistants for you to move things where they need to be moved to and leveled. Please send me your resume with the number of years managing stone patio projects and it is first come first on the most experience and I can keep you busy starting tomorrow till its done. Yes, I know it is 4th of July weekend coming up, but don't let that stop you. Why? Because I should be planning a company party on my new stone patio that I just ripped up, but I am not and I am really pissed off that I will be working on it instead. I need this done now!!! The fireworks do not start until after dark anyway:) Having lots of experience tiling outside existing concrete and bathrooms is a huge plus, because those are the next big projects. Lots of work for weeks involved here for the right guy. I've got LOTS of great people you will be working with too and I am about as flexible of a guy you can work with...just been too flexible latey. Thanks.

Thread somewhat hijacked from the original, so will throw in very ballpark cost of what a "desparate request" costs for an aog person (ariplane on ground) or similar skill.
LONG way from $9 hr and you provide the transportation of the one example posted.
Including travel, etc, over 5 figures per week. Daily cost of an off-duty traffic cop would probably be minimal compared?
If the OP had proposed that type of remuneration up front, probably a few folks would already be there??
Planning is everything. Back in the time of the Northridge earthquake, there were contracts for freeway repair with $100K per day incentive or penalty from the contract finish date. The winning contractor made a bundle by being a few months ahead - even airshipped rebar from Japan to accelerate the schedule.
I wonder about the traffic cop too....

In the NE you have to have a cop at sites where you are using part of the road. One little way the local cops make some extra money!!!
paying the cop has got to be cheaper than pay the rate and fines...

well now perhaps this does qualify to be classified as a felony. to be sure a "hijacking" has taken place. I do believe the subject had started out along the lines of Help Wanted. And perhaps due to the nature of the deadline this is where it should remain. Ah but we digress (yet again). I am associated with this job and I do believe that there are now some pictures to be had for the viewing pleasure of all interested. The problems associated with this project compounded with some last minute changes to the details, due to Historic board input and the inclusion of a couple of other hitches. If the pictures are posted then you will take note of the three round top windows. There must be a round over bead cut into the inner face of the accompanying three layer built up Azek. This is proving to be rather vexing, to say it mildly. Well the short of it is some rather qualified help is still required. And the deadline is fast approaching. So if there are any persons that exhibit the talent to work on this here masterpiece then they will be payed with cash money nuff said.
and the photos are where?

You ought to orient them properly before posting them !!
Walter,
I agree. Not much care in posting oriented pics and much to large.
The pic with the worker on stageing shows the wrong radius trim and will be a 'water' catch.
I would be willing to guess the origanal sash was curved and not flat. This job looks like a remodel and not a restoration.
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
I'm with you. I think from what I see, they may be trying to fab up azek as a quick "git er done" instead of getting the proper trim made in a shop.
So, ya tear down the scaffold and re-erect when the millwork is completed. Z

Oh I see it alright.
I had contacted him back when he first asked for help, but I needed to hang here for personal reasons ( Ma took a turn for the worse) and I am GLAD now, that I didn't bite into that mess.
Get done by Wed? It could be done, but it's gonna take some hoo-doo with the voo-doo to make it LOOK good.Z
How much would 92 x 36 double hung, heavy laminated sound resistant, argon gas/energy efficient, aluminum clad windows with curved glass cost if that is what you mean? These windows cost over 50k and were approved my the Historical Commission, so I am quite satisfied with the look and quality of the windows. We had a lot of problems with Marvin window company. They promised 8 weeks to fabricate and took 4 months, the aluminum clad was supposed to be made so that we would not have to use Azek, but they were not. These things happen, however the posting is to solicit help from skilled carpenters who can install exterior trim.I am not asking for design help, or anything else that would have a "liability" issue to those of you who are unwilling to help for these reasons. You come in cut the pieces, install and get paid for your services. We had problems with the hired help (some not showing up, others getting injured at other job sites) and here we are soliciting help from a forum of "experts".I am not asking for a "pissing party", but I take insult to some of the comments as there is not much left to do and it is not situation that Voodo is needed to finish.
I don't believe anyone is deliberately trying to insult you. But if you posted this request at a lumber yard with the photos contractors would discuss their thoughts on it. And they are doing so here.
The difference is you are privy to this conversation where you wouldn't be if it were done over coffee or at the yard while waiting on material. You chose to post it here and so the conversation begins. I hope you find someone as you seem sincere but the limitations you have already heard are not made up. DanT
I am surpruised that you (opr the cusrtomer) were able to afford custom windows with curved glass, but chose not to hire a contractor with sufficient resources to properly man the job."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
A restoration would not call for flat clad windows. A remodel/renovation would.
I have repaired/built curved sash windows on restorations. Not as cheap as Marvins.
Once again, I think this project has management/manpower issues and probably a bid that did not cover the scope of work in its entirety.
Good luck with your project. Post some pics Wednesday upon completion.

Yea I'm curious to see that mess complete. I try never to get involved with someone in such a hurry and half way done, always a bad sign. Walter said it well.
Looks like you are not going to get much help here. Just opinions and criticism.
I would work with the scaffolding people on a compromise. Maybe they could leave part of it up and it could be moved as you work. Do they have another job where they really need the scaffolding?
I would also talk to the tenants or their representatives. I'm, sure they don't want to be stuck with a job half done as you go bankrupt.
I know you don't need a bunch of jerks criticizing you for poor planning or other aspects of how you could have done better. I wish you the best, and would help if I were in the area. Good luck!
PS I have been in a similar situation. It was scary and I lost some money, but made it through. I learned how useless some supposedly good people could be.How can you understand God if you can't understand people? How can you understand people if you can't understand yourself?
You may have a point but let me add a few things , In all the years i have been in Biz, 30 every time i was called on short notice there was something major wrong, IE>>> someone did not get paid, There were disputes, The Homeowner was a jerk and the contractor walked, Its always a bit insulting to think im supposed to stop 4 months of back logged work to run over on a short notice, Leave a job and those waiting to go help a stranger, While Montclair girl may just very well be a innocent Homeowner i still have no doctors or dentists{a bad toothache yes but its a patch and come back thing} that take me right away i have to make an Appointment one month in advance. In maybe 20 years straight i was booked 3 months maybe 8 months in advance and a few times one year out!!!, These were all people i had worked for and the money was good, Now take into account theres already problems and Iffy things going on so please dont use the word jerks so freely.

Somebody is asking for help, not advice. If you can't help...
You are only meant if you feel you are meant. People are piling on and making assumptions, which may or may not be right.
You are not being called. You don't have to leave a job.
When I needed help, I got advice. I also got judgment. I didn't need either. I knew what the problem was.
When you call the paramedic, do you expect them to sit around the station or in the chat room and talk about how you probably ate too much fat and that is why you are having a heart attack?
How can you understand God if you can't understand people? How can you understand people if you can't understand yourself?
When you call the paramedic, do you expect them to sit around the station or in the chat room and talk about how you probably ate too much fat and that is why you are having a heart attack?
Actually, yes. Yes I do. Maybe not in front of me, but I would expect anyone serious about their job to deconstruct how something came to be. Merely being judgmental serves little useful purpose, but determining cause and effect can be very illuminating. Sometimes it's a fine line between the two.
Using terms like "a bunch of jerks" sure sounds judgmental to me. Does it apply to me? I don't know your standards. My own comment in this thread was "the urgency is a bit unnerving".
I think most everyone here is truly interested in helping if they can. If a few comments run afoul, sometimes it best just to ignore them.
I'm stuck in a hole down here. Can anybody throw me a rope?
Well, you shouldn't have fallen down there in the first place! Maybe if you paid me enough, I would stop what I am doing and get you out. What do you BTers think?
In my experience, people who fall into holes are doing something wrong. I try to stay away from that kind of problem now. What do you guys think?
Absolutely! They should go to their local lumberyard for help. Why don't they do that? Obviously, poor planning got them into this position.
Only someone completely out of their league would ever fall into a hole. Frankly, I don't have much sympathy for them. How can you understand God if you can't understand people? How can you understand people if you can't understand yourself?
I am with you. All that was asked for was contact with a good contractor or tradesmen. If said good contractor or tradesman can think for themself, they'll figure out on their own if this job is worth the time and trouble or not.
No one here that's not looked at the job should be questioning it.
It's a simple help wanted ad. And in times when way too many people here are crying about not having enough work, I'd think less killing of the messenger should be going on. This probably isn't helping add any additional Help Wanted ad's to this section of the forum. I know I'd not bother after reading the replies.
Maybe everyone would feel better about themselves if they just stuck to complaining about the bad economy and direction of the trades in general.
Short notice and others walking off a difficult job, which BTW didn't seem to happen here, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not if you are very skilled, very knowledgable and know how to price your skills and write a nice tight contract. Add some negotiating skills and someone could actually walk in, be the hero, and walk away with some decent money for a couple of days worth of work.
Or everyone could log on to their computers and complain. Vic.
was the scaffold OSHA approved? was everyone wearing hardhats, safety glasses, steel toed boots and a cup? have the safety police jumped in yet?
The title of the thread says it all, and seems to have been ignored by most. How can you understand God if you can't understand people? How can you understand people if you can't understand yourself?
You must admit, our way isn't as much fun. Vic
And you must admit, the other way is educational if you read between the lines."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
You hit the nail on the head. You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.
Marv
I agree with you, Sasquatch. She asked for help and got a sermon.
I was almost able to help the Jersey Girl. I referred her request to a friend in northern Jersey. He actually had just hit an inspection-related delay and would have been happy to jump in on her job. But he had already scheduled a trip with his daughter by the time he got the message.
At least you made the effort. Sometimes when a contractor gets in trouble, others pile on. It sounds like that is what happened. I bet they don't even have a new site scheduled for the scaffold they are in such a hurry to take down.
If she can't get help, I think all concerned are going to be sorry because they will all lose something. How can you understand God if you can't understand people? How can you understand people if you can't understand yourself?
I'm glad you guys mentioned it. For the longest time I have been seeing threads on here complaining about lack of work and people taking their shingle down and going to work for someone else. Here somebody posts a honest offer of work and a plea for help no less and all she gets is a lecture on her management skills, lack of planning and even a critical evaluation of the job.
I hope for Karma's sake all those who chimed in with anything but help eventually get paid back in lectures the next time they get in a bind of some sort and need help. Can't tell you the number of people I have pulled out of the ditch on our curve and not once did it occur to me to lecture them instead of helping them.
Sounds like this one's headin fer the tavern.
Thank you so much! I made it through and it came out really well.
I think you'll do even better next time. Nothing succeeds like success! How can you understand God if you can't understand people? How can you understand people if you can't understand yourself?
Chuck ,
How does that old saying go --- " lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part " or something to that effect !!
Walter
Walter,
" lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part "
I think you have that saying to a "T"

Here are the final pictures of project in question that Workinprogress and I are needing help with. Please call 201-696-7737 for anyone who is able to help us out.Thank you once again.
Sounds like a management/manpower problem.
I have done Historic Resoration over the years and have always ordered specialty items from a millshop or milled them in my shop.
Some of the items needed, shown in the pics posted by MG, show me millwork that should have been ordered from a custom shop keeping in mind the lead time required.
To site build those items will be much more expensive and less accurate than shop built.

LOL! They want a seventy dollar guy for 9-13
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
That's after the probation period. This is getting to be one tough area. I don't think there are going to be a lot of qualified people jumping on that job, but who knows.
9-13 for those qualifications is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard in my life!
And they need their own "pecks" tools too!
Yeah, in those classic CL ads the (home)owners come off like they know so much more than anyone else.I'm just saying to myself, so just 'effing do it yourself, Mr. know-it-all!
Those skills and knowledge - $9-13 per hour, whoopdy dam doo. After reading that post that fellow probably wrote the song "Take this Job and Shove it."
And so it goes
Sad isn't it? The other day on this site I read where the avg.
pay for UNSKILLED help was $8-10 per hr. National avg.
Please clarify the 9-13 dollar an hour comment. That certainly was not the going rate on this job. More like 4-5 times that.
Pay a man what he is worth , and you will both be happy....
That particular post was referencing a comment made by dam inspector back in post # 122000.47.
Often times is a thread an associated theme gets developed among posters where in a sense two topics are being discuseed in the same thread.
Dam inspector was speaking of an ad in Craig's List for his Ohio area in Dayton/Cincinnati.
Cheers

On reflection, it didn't seem as witty as you deserve and I couldn't think of anything better so I decided to wait for better bait.
A lot of threads here get derailed from the original intent.
You get used to it after a while. And kind of look forward to see how far it can go off track.
Glad to here your job worked out.
Just wish it had worked out with ME making money for once.Glenn

What?
You don't believe in unicorns?
sure I do...
they're just smarter than letting themselves be found in the middle of a dog and pony show...

Something went awry, there was a request, somewhere, for bldg, mgt. Requesting all skills at rather high levels, offering $9-13 per hr.
Sure are a lot of red flags in that description.
I completely dug up ALL the work that a previous team did.
The cutting noise is incredibly disrupting Shame on God for noit making the stones the exact shpe he needs.
They two will make great experienced assistants for you If the business is that busy, when will the assistants have time to help move stone?
Yes, I know it is 4th of July weekend coming up, but don't let that stop you. I bet the pay is great too."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Hi all.
It is the 4th of July and I am hoping that there is someone out there who can work even if it is one day on this project.
We are looking for skilled help for Sunday, July 5th and Monday - Wednesday end of day of next week.
I remain positive that there has got to be someone who either can do it, or knows a friend of a friend who can earn some money and while putting your thumbprint on a landmark building in Montclair, NJ.
I want to thank those of you for the positive feedback and helpful suggestions.
Happy 4th!

well, how'd it go? as mainly a lurker or learner here, bookends to these storries are greatly appreciated. I really hope that you didn't get to discouraged by the responses you got. seemed to be 1/3 or mor helpful, 1/4 "constructive" criticism. and the rest just tryin to help. hope the project reached a good conclusioun, or at least a temporary state of 'good"
please let us know.
Darren
I guessin she wont be back.
Anybody want to calculate the odds?
Anybody catch what those windows were lookin at ? Or anyone know the area that would know ? Just curious.
She probably won't be back. I took care of it. Sort of.Called a guy I used to work with who doesn't call me very often. But I remember he had mentioned being slow recently, so what the heck.Called him, asked him if he had used Azek before, gave him the phone #s.I just called him a minute ago. He's finishing up his second 14 hour day. Must be busy. He hung up on me.I just called to see if it worked out.I think MontclairGirl owes me one.Good luck collecting, huh?Glenn
Owes you one WHAT exactly?
I some tiimes remind folks, "one" can be one dozen or one gross too.
I'm not sure one WHAT exactly. Just....one....that I will never get.But at least I already know that.Glenn
Good for you, Glenn. I'm sure the lady appreciates the lead on a carp, and I hope your friend is well paid and satisfied.Good community here, I think.Greg
Glenn,
Any update?
I was probably wrong in the way I asked Montclairgirl some questions/comments about her project, but I am interested as to how the project turned out.
Also wondering why your friend hung up on you. If I worked 2 straight 14 hour days, I most likely not even answer the phone.
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Never returned my call. But that's not that uncommon. I don't exactly feel the love very often. If I here anything, I'll let you know.Glenn
Much thanks given to Tashler for the leed. I will post some pictures to show how all turned out soon. As well as a bit of commentary on all the chit chat here at the forum. A lot of issues associated with this project, and a great deal of difficulty in resolving the problems at hand. Again thanks to all that offered constructive aid in this.
How did Chris work out? was it he and Phil, or others?Glenn
It was Chris and his trusty sidekick- super Phil, they did fairly well considering what they were up against. No nonsense hard workers, if I could just have gotten them to work 18 hour days we could have finished on time. As it was we had a bit of an extension for the deadline. All turned out nicely and looks worlds better from the previous state it was in. Thank you again sir, it was a tremendous help. If you are ever in this part of the world look me up, I owe you dinner....David Forbes
Nah, you owe me nothing. And neither does Chris.Glad it worked out.Glenn
Hi!It went well. It was hard to get the rough comments, but there was an individual in the forum that contacted his friend Chris and they came over and helped save the day. The work looks very good and the architect from the Historical Commission really likes the work as well as the Condo Board. Thanks for reaching out to me.T
Glad to do it. Could you email me the address so that I could come see the work that Chris and Phil did?Glenn
I'm glad someone helped you out. There were some rude comments made, but some of the guys here have been taken advantage of in situations like that.
really glad it ended well for you. And, I truly hope you don't take anything that was posted personally, but seriously re-read them to see if they can give you any wisdom for your future projects. As I said, I'm a DYI type and contribute basically nothing here. But, there is ALOT of knowledge to be gained if you have a thick enough skin to ask the tough questions.
All us thin skinned people just get to sit back and learn from all you other great posters. Thank you for reaching out for help here, and Thank you for checking back in, and being tough enough to take it. Glad it all worked out for you. We've ALL been there to one degree or another.
