Detatched garage converting to woodworking shop

dynamwebz | Posted in Construction Techniques on November 14, 2013 04:11am

Hello!

I have this 90 year old detatched garage I am converting. It had been neglected for decades. See pics. The house is a bungalow and the garage was built to match. 10′ X 20′.

I live in Cranston, Rhode Island.

I’m sick of carrying wood into my basement.

Plan was to rebuild one long wall as the old 1×6 T&G was rotted as well as most of the studs. The overhangs were rotted as well. Pulled it off with no tools.

So I hired a couple of guys for helpers and we stripped off the old cedar shingles, broke out the 1×6 T&G, replaced each stud and hung 3/4″ CDX. Same to front wall. The rear and other long side were not rotted so we hung 1/2″ CDX over the T&G for strength and a flat surface for the new trim and red cedar shingles. I will pre-stain the cedar first.

Next step, rebuild the roof overhangs and reshingle to match the house.

Then I ripped my left bicep lower tendon from the bone while at the gym. Just had surgery to re-attach with a toggle bolt. Ouch!

So we wrapped the whole thing in 15 lb felt,  plastic and tarps for the winter. Had to fire my help. One of them offered to attach the trim and cedar siding for me. With his finish gun and brads. A dozen brads per shingle. Never heard of such a technique. He argued it was better than 2 stainless 3D box nails per shingle. Sorry. I did my homework. Shingles are 18 inch.

Next spring I plan to get back to the project.

I found this link to the carriage style doors. I’m going to build them over the winter. I found the original door hinge mortices when I removed some newer trim. So carriage doors are corect for the garage.

I plan to add a small wood stove, on a cement board and tile base for winter woodworking. An electic heater as well for when I’m not in there.

Yeah, I’ll add electricity as well. The old wiring looks real bad.

The sub floor will be PT 2X4’s with 3/4″ T&G OSB over the cement slab.

The flooring and walls will be Clover Lea 3/4″ x 5-1/8″ x 6′ New England White Pine from Lumber Liquidator$. $1.19 sq ft.

Sheet rock on ceiling with lots of insulatin above it.

Sound ok so far? Anything sound incorrect?

Questions.

  1. What should I cover the exterior walls with before I hang the red cedar shingles? Remove the felt and use vapor barrior?
  2. Should I make the walls thicker to add additional insulation?
  3. Kraft faced insulation or no face?
  4. Should I add some vapor barrior to the cement slab? I dont seem to have any water issues through the cement. That I know of.
  5. How should I anchor the 2X4’s to the slab? Drill and bolt? Construction adhesive? 16″ on center? Closer?
  6. Should I vent the roof?
  7. Any other advice?

Thanks.

Mike

You could have saved some money and done the surgery yourself with a couple of deck screws.
