Detectors/Sensors that can confirm the amount of mortar coverage on the back of a tile
Hi,
I’d like to know if anyone is aware of a detector/sensor that can measure the thickness of the mortar on the back of a tile? We are concerned that someone has used a “dot & dab” technique to apply mortar to the tiles. Limited proof of this has been cut-outs for a niche and cracked tiles in a separate bathroom.
It would be nice to know if there is >75% coverage on the back of the tiles on the walls (even though the typical standard is roughly 80-95% from ceramic tile foundation). However, the detector/sensor must be accurate enough to justify a claim. This probably means that the unit can detect the thickness of the tile as well. I recognize that the a measuring grid would need to be used to measure the % of coverage.
I look forward to your responses.

Even tho they haven’t yet perfected a reliable stud finder…..
It’s doubtful there’s a scanner to do what you want.
Your picture could be enough to suggest a bogus tile job. There should be much better spread showing full coverage of trowel grooves. In a bad spot maybe there’s a flat blob. But if most tiles look like this, it might suggest a rookie mistake in adhesive spread. What did the wall look like where this was removed?
Unfortunately, the Schluter board was relatively clean.
